| worst case scenario - selecting a new pup We had to put our puppy down today. He went from being a cute energetic puppy who was learning his name and playing to a lethargic and catatonic puppy. We brought him to the vet this morning and he was severly dehydrated and the doctor brought us the bill for total early treatment... it was 1600 to 2000 without any promises. So we opted for the pervo(sp?) test and then we had to make the decision after that came back negative. It was a tough decision, we only had the dog 11 days, but we're crushed. it was our first dog for the both of us and we were trying our best.
We are currently seeking to use the puppy lemon law in PA to get our money back, but that won't bring our beloved mootz back. we're now in market for another dog, we learned our lesson about not going to a pet shop, that says its "family raised" what a bunch of bull.
we're looking for any information, we went to the humane society today and all there was 100 pitbulls or so... no puppies or anything that sparked our interest. We're looking into a castaway critters meeting at petsmart this saturday..
we're not replacing our puppy, i'm just filling a large void that grew inside me very quickly... thanks everyone for your help during his short but sweet life.

| Re: worst case scenario - puppy lemon laws? I'm glad you learned your lesson about pet stores...the same holds true for back yard breeders. Run very far, very fast away from these people.
Is your heart set on a puppy? Adult or adolescent dogs are make just as wonderful companions and need homes too! Personally, I prefer to let a puppy pee, poo and chew up someone else's house. I'll take an adult dog who's temperament is accurately assessable and has learned some manners already any day of the week. |

| Re: worst case scenario - puppy lemon laws? Curb - your link isn't linking properly....it takes me to an error page. From CP - it's weird how sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't, but I think I have it fixed now. Thank you!

| Re: worst case scenario - selecting a new pup That's horrible! I'm so sorry that happened to you. Have you gone back to the pet store to tell them what happened? I'd let them know, in a not very nice way. Is there any chance you'll be able to find out exactly what was wrong with your pup? At any rate, you can use this experience to educate others about the dangers of buying from pet stores.
If I remember correctly, your puppy was part Golden? I don't know about your area, but in mine, there are many dogs in golden retriever rescue orgs, both adult and puppies, as well as some golden mix puppies. I'd start there. Some types of dogs are hard to find in rescue, but I don't think goldens are one of them.
If you want to go to a breeder this time, I'd look for one that tests for genetic problems and has health and heredity guarantees. I'd go there and see how the puppies are raised, see the parents of the dogs, and get to know the breeder. Ask to talk to people who have bought puppies from them in the past. A good breeder should ask you alot of questions and should be there for you should anything happen with your dog.
Good luck. |

| Re: worst case scenario - selecting a new pup I totally feel your pain! I had adopted a lab boxer mix locally. There is a guy in my area who takes in unwanted littlers, vet checks them, and sells them through local classified ads. He had a lot of references, and I was an amateur as far as getting a puppy, and didn't think to much about it. I had Katie for three days. When I got her, her stools were firm, she was active and was eating and drinking. However in a little over 12 hours, she became lethargic, wasn't eating or drinking anything, and had diarrhea. I used an eye dropper to get her to drink water, but she didn't ever get better. I took her to the vet, and they weren't sure what was wrong with her, she tested negative for parvo, but she was dehydrated and the vet bills were adding up very quickly. I too, had to make the decision to put her down. I went back to the guy I bought her from, and he paid the vet bill and refunded me my money, as was part of the agreement when I bought her. At least we didn't get totally ripped off, but it didn't take away from the heartbreak!
I'm very sorry for what you've gone through. I wish you luck. Read the thread "where good dogs come from" in the general dog forum category. There is a lot of good information on breeders and chosing dogs.
Good luck! |

| Re: worst case scenario - selecting a new pup we live in PA, so there is a puppy lemon law to help us. although the seller turned us out yesterday, saying that we needed it in writing from the vet to say that he had the parasite when we bought him. we're not exactly sure from what he died, it was mainly dehydrated and we think that parasite medicine didn't end the parasite. thanks everyone..

| Re: worst case scenario - selecting a new pup I'm so sorry about your pup. I'm sorry you had to learn the truth about pet stores the hard way. You should find a good breeder. Ask them many questions. Or you could go to an animal shelter. Dogs there may be more of a risk with temperment and health, since you know so little of their history, but you would be saving a life. |

| Re: worst case scenario - selecting a new pup I too am very sorry about your puppy . Have you looked on petfinder.com they have all kinds dogs and puppies of all breeds and mixes . Most are with rescues and they come fully vetted most times thats spay or nuter , heart worm test and shots .
You might want to contact a rescue near you and tell them what you are loooking for good luck with your next baby . |

| Re: worst case scenario - selecting a new pup ok, so we finally got the pet store owner to reimburse us, in theory, we actually haven't received the money, he has 14 days to give us our money back, he was very rude about the entire situation, so we are trying to file a complaint and possibly go to the news station's with our story.
but today he did sign a receipt saying he would refund our money. so thats a step forward.
tom. at 10 am we are going to look at a lab / border collie mix from castawaycritters. his name is rambles. he's a cutie. there are like 8 of them in the litter, but its a rescue company and are working with petfinder.
so tomorrow i'll see if we fall in love so quickly again. this whole experience, although heart-wrenching has been a great experience. we've told everyone we've met who has pets about the store. so they are now avoiding it. our vet is behind us all the way, they hate to see this stuff too. so i hope something else comes from this. we don't want someone else to suffer like we had too.
i mean we are 25 and 26 years old. we balled for a day straight. imagine bringing home this pup for a birthday present for a 6 year old and go through that. it would detrimental. so.... every cloud..
thanks again everyone...
willl post pics tomorrow

| Re: worst case scenario - selecting a new pup Smallz,
Contact the state attorney, the seller is incorrect. Besure you have the sales contract, vet bills nad get a statement from your vet. A Necropsy will also help your cause if the pup hasn't been disposed of yet or if you buried it in your backyard. |
