English are taller and longer and the head is longer then the American cocker.

English Cocker Spaniel are english and American Cockers are american Both breeds have the same purpose and function. English cockers a lareger, have a longer face, and a more "natural" look. American cockers are more flashy then their english counter parts, which is typical for any american bred dog/breed. The American is also smaller, has ashorter face, and a more sloped back. The american is a decendent of the english and over time has been developed into the english Cocker Spaniel. Think of it as the amerian bred GSD's being a different breed from the euorpean GDS's.

Basically besides looks, The English Cocker still would probably excel at what the breed was intended to do where as the American has been bred more or less as a house pet ( sad but true) and is very VERY hard to find American Cockers who excel at their job. Which is sad because they are a very compact hunting partner.

I watched a show about the two spaniels. They said that in the late 40's and 50's the American cocker was one of the most popular family dogs and so puppy mills and backyarders were abundant and the breed still suffers from that. A lot was lost. Once again good breeders enhance the breed and quality is lost with puppy mills and backyard breeders.
