| Re: Favorite Breed Group? I chose the working group, but it's really a tie between the herding and working group for me.
Rottweiler and Doberman- Working group
Even though Rottweiler's are a herding breed, I guess their work in PP makes them just a plain working dog. lol
And of course the herding breed for Beauces, well actually, they're just in the Miscellaneous group, but I'm pretty sure AKC is putting them into either the herding or working group... Goes off to find out |

ETA: Alpha, rotties are NOT herding dogs. I've never heard of a rottweiler herding anything. Besides, they're not in the herding group- if their work in any way includes herding, they will be put into the herding group. GSDs, for example, are known for being service dogs, police dogs, etc, but have the herding instinct so are put into the herding group. Rotties have no herding instinct. http://www.akc.org/breeds/herding_group.cfm

| Re: Favorite Breed Group? Itoo chose herding. But Cassie, what you said is not entirely accurate. For example, The Samoyed was kept in the working group although it was used originally as an all purpose dog including a reindeer herder. The Breed club and the AKC compromised and kept it in working when the herding group was split off but allowed the Samoyed to be the only non-herding group breed permitted to participate in herding trials.
I believe Rotties were used at one time as drovers. According to legend, the Rottie would help drive the cattle to market and the money from the sale would be put in a pouch attached to the dog's collar to keep it safe on the way back home. |

Actually, rotties have a great herding instinct and they were used for herding and protecting livestock.

| Re: Favorite Breed Group? I need to vote in multiple catagories
My fav breeds are in different groups, Terrier (cairn), Sporting (Lab), Hounds (Whippet, Saluki)
Excuse me about the dogs in what group: The German Shephard was in the Working Group for the LONGEST time; only recently did they move the GSD back to the Hearding group - and when was the last time you saw a GSD herding sheep? I think the original intention of the Rottie was as a guard/herding dog - same as the GSD.

| Re: Favorite Breed Group? Yup, Rotties were originally bred to be both a guard dog and a cattle driver. I have an AKC dog breed poster with all the breeds and it includes where each one is originally from and what its original purpose was.
You know its funny that I just noticed this morning that Rotties were originally bred as cattle drovers and then I came on this forum and for the first time someone mentions it.... |

Same as dobermans, dogs can prove to be very versatile. Some more food for thought: german sheppards are in the herding group yet when many people think of them they think police dogs, are cops using them to herd?? Please don't be offended with my reply, just trying to be informative.
Check out this site for more info on rotts and their herding: http://www.amrottclub.org/herding.htm |

| Re: Favorite Breed Group? Uhhh, okay then...
I've actually seen a GSD herding. Nothing abnormal, IMO....but I have never seen a rottie herd anything. Never heard of it, either. To me, that's just weird...and if they did it way back when, don't you think that the instinct may be gone by now since no one uses it?
If you have a rottie that herds, please show me a video. |

| Re: Favorite Breed Group? One of our handlers is this massive bald guy who handles Japanese Chins and Papillons. Makes me laugh.
I chose herding, it's by far my favorite group as a whole even though I love papillons. I'm not too fond of toys in general.
And yes, rotties are definitely herding dogs. My uncle has used rotties for cattle work for as long as I can remember. He and his old rottie named Hannah used to work on King Ranch a while back. She was such a sweet dog and probably the best working dog I've ever been around. Plus she was great with kids. I don't have any videos or pictures of Hannah, but I can guarantee she did herd. They're a very versatile breed and can be used for all sorts of work. |

| Re: Favorite Breed Group? Sorry to put it bluntly, but Cassie your wrong
Rottweilers were FIRST OFF cattle dogs, than the Romans began using them as protection dogs SECOND.
They were around for herding, so they also used them for protection.
I know a few people actually that breed, work and show with Rotts and they'll all tell you the same
Hence why Rottweilers tend to have that "independence" that many herding breeds have. In herding, dogs often have to make most of the decisions on their own.
I would assume they're in the working group because their work is not only limited to herding, but protection work as well. Most herding dogs do have some sort of protection instinct in them anywas, because when herding, most dogs are required to PROTECT the herd as well.
I'll find some links in a second. http://www.rottclub.ca/rottbegin.html
From the rottweiler club of Canada... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rokAQX2exbs
Just a youtube vid after a googled, I can't watch the video with dial-up, but I imagine there's a rott herding somewhere in there.
