to desex or not?

So my new boy hasnt been desexed. He is approx 3 years old. The vet suggested I do it when I can. Is it a neccesity? Please excuse my lack of knowledge on this, Im just not sure as to the reasons for or against. He isn't going to be around other dogs except on walks, he can't get out of our garden and he isnt hyperactive. I'm happy to get it done if it is the thing to do, just wondered whether more experienced male dog owners (I've had females b4 now) can give me some insight into this.

Re: to desex or not?

If you get him neutered he is less likely to get diseases (im not sure what it is called). Also a male dog who is neutered is less likely to try and roam. If a female in heat comes a long.....who knows what your dog can do. One of the stud males I worked with was the most sedate dog (and oldest) out of all the studs we have and he is the only one that needs to be far away from females in heat because he will CHEW THROUGH ANY FENCE!! we ended up having to put metal around the lower half of the fence to keep him from getting to the females in heat!

So I sugest you neuter him for his health and safety. Besides there could always be that one accident where you left the gate open or he rushed the open front door and there just so happened to be a female in heat around waiting for him!

Yes, get him neutered. It will make him a better pet as well as eliminate the chance of testicular cancer. What it will not do, is automatically end any behavioral problems. But, since you don't indicate he has any, this won't be a factor in your case.

My dog was neutered but definitely not desexed, he was around a beautiful female german shepherd who was coming into heat and he knew and was rather interested....he is still quite the man dog--lol
