When my dog was a puppy...

When my dog was a puppy we took her to the vet. The secretary thought she was so cute that she picked him up holding her from under his front legs so her back legs were dangling. While she was saying "You are so cute! You are so cute!", my dog peed all over her keyboard. She didn't think my dog was so cute anymore.... hehehe.

Anyone have puppy stories?

Hehe...aww how funny! I had a dog when I was younger named Puddin' who was a dalmation mix. When we got her you could hold her in the palm of your hand. Obviously she was the runt. Anyway, we also had this cat (still do although he is still living with my mom) named Rambo who looks like Garfield. He weighed 22 lbs. at this time. He's a bit older now and weighs hardly anything. Anyway Rambo used to always attack the puppy and just torture him when she was little and we would warn him that when Puddin' got bigger she would let him have it. Well, let's just say Rambo paid for teasing Puddin' for the rest of her life.

Hazel pooped while in puppy class once. It was really embarrasing. I didn't realize that dh hadn't taken her outside before I picked her up for class.

We also tested Hazel's water rescue instincts last summer. Newfs have a natural instinct for water rescue and will try to save anyone that is drowning, even if they've never had any training. A friend of ours went out into the lake, about neck deep, and started thrashing around and yelling for help. Hazel bailed into the water and went out to him. She circled him until he grabbed her tail and then she drug him to shore. He didn't let her pull his full weight because she was only about 6 months old, he just kept hold of her tail with enough weight so that she knew he was there. After she brought him to shore, we praised her for such a good job saving him. He turned and went back into the water to finish his swim, and Hazel just looked at him like "What the he11???? I just saved your butt and you go right back in there???" Then she kind of grunted and laid down facing away from him like "Fine, drown then, see if I care." It was soooooo funny!!!

That Garfield cat sounds cute.

My dog has pooped in training class as well - kinda embarassing.

I'm just imagining your friend faking the drowning... it sounds really funny... although real drowning is not funny.

I didn't know that about dogs. I'm guessing it's just coastal dogs? Or can dogs from anywhere do that?

When we first got Scruffy we discovered that he didn't bark very well. He ahd been a show dog and they had punctured his lyrnyx (Sp?). Anyway his bark was a strange wheezing sound. My neighbor at the time wasw from Mexico and he thought there was something wrong with our dog - it was hard to explain to him what the case really was. I think he always thought there was something weird going on over at oiur place.

I personally haven't had the experience of a dog poopin during training class but I don't think i would be too embarrassed, dogs poop and that's just what they do. The added stress and marking teritory probably add to the temptation too.
Plus you're at dog training class and these are probably some of the habits you are trying to get rid of.

But like I said I've never gotten the chance to experience this and if it does happen I'm sure I'm completely understand where you are coming from.

Scruff only poops in private. If I take him out in the middle of winter he circles around in the snow looking for tha just right place. If I happen to look at him (2:30 AM) he looks embarrassed and stops his crouch and begins circling all over again.

Why did I have to get such a modest dog?

I don't know about other breeds, but Newf's have been bred for their water rescue abilities. There are many documented cases of untrained newfs saving drowning victims. They have fully webbed feet and a waterproof coat that keeps them warm even in very frigid water. An adult newf in good condition can pull a very heavy boat for 2 hours in cold water.

Our first newf wouldn't swim at all (we know now that she was sick and didn't have the strength for swimming) but Hazel loves to swim. She is a very smooth and powerful swimmer. When we are out at the lake, if we take a walk along the shoreline, she cuts across the coves by swimming them instead of walking the shoreline around them.

When my dog was a puppy, he would constantly leave the house where he "lived" (read: was ignored and left out in all kinds of weather) and come to my house. Eventually they gave him to me. It was perfect.
