New neighbours.......

My new neighbours who live across the street seem to be rather un-intelligent people. They have a rottweiller and two shepherds and all are very hyper dogs that bark incessantly when they see another animal.
Well I was speaking to the wife this morning and she asked me about Chloe and asked if I would ever breed her. I said no she was spayed and the lady looked at me kind of funny and sid "o but how is that possible?" I said "Well we brought her to the vet, they put her out and cut her open and removed her uterus and ovaries, then sewed her back up and we took he home to heal." She then said "you can't fix small dogs, my vet siad its not possible because they are too small to cope with the anesthetic." I said I had no idea what vet she went to but he was quite seriously mistaken and should go back to school. She laughed and said she agreed then asked me again if I would be breeding Chloe. "No" I said again "remember? she is spayed, she can't have babies." "O thats right, I meant Sadie." "Nope, Sadie will be fixed in a few weeks when she is old enough" I said. "But she can have pups when she is a year old and then be spayed. That is what we did with out rottie, it is better for them health wise you know." I smiled and said I had something to do in the house and left because if I would have stayed......I would have made an enemy not a neighbour!

Re: New neighbours.......

Wow good idea to go back inside! I had an experience a couple days ago where I was at a friends house and his mom was talking about the food recall with me. She was saying that all pet food has "euthanasia stuff" in it because the cow, lamb or whatever animal is in it was euthanized with "euthanasia stuff" and it stays in the animal and goes in the food and then the pets eat it. I was trying to tell her if you buy the Ultra Premium type foods it would be less likely that bad ingredients will be in the food. She refused to listen to what I had to say and was convinsed that there was "euthanasia stuff" in all pet food because she saw a show on the Discovery channel that said it was true!

I couldnt just leave because my sister wasnt leaving yet! I ended up staring and petting Lily (my cat who came with me to the house) and ignoring everything else she said while nodding so she thought I was listening....So I didnt explode or anything. Lily was a lifesaver!

Re: New neighbours.......

I love meeting dog owners and talking dog stuff with them, but some of them are just, plain dumbasses.

I met a guy with a gorgeous great Dane a few years back when we were both walking our dogs on a trail. When I pulled out a bag to pick up after my lab, he looked at me like I was crazy and asked what I was doing.

"It's biodegradable, ya know!" he told me.

I told him, maybe after 25 years but, in the meantime, we had a couple of pretty big dogs and I wasn't sure that anyone using the trail really wanted to step in those giant dung heaps.

I just could not convince him that picking up after your dog was just good manners and common sense.

I wish he could have been here when the snow in our yard melted and I picked up about 100 pounds of dog poop from the winter.

Re: New neighbours.......

old school felt it was better for a dog to go through one period of heat before spaying them; however, that has been scientifically--at least not totally. Some people also feel it is better to neuter a male dog after six months, closer to a year, so they can get a surge of hormones and become larger large breeds (rotties, german shepherds--particularly their head size) but that has also not been totally proven. Now, if you look it up online they are even saying to spay or neuter before 6 months, I know the North Shore Animal League is now spaying/neutering kittens and dogs younger, I am sure other shelters are following suit. Myself, I had my dog neutered on his six month birthday. I agree with Cesar Milan who feels that most dogs should be spayed or neutered in order to alleviate a lot of problems.
