| Should she or shouldn't she I have a friend (in England) that has a somewhat rare breed of dog - her & hubby are of 2 minds about neutering or placing him for sire
I suggest neutering but I need more reasons - as she keeps bringing up that he is considered (by English standards anyway) to be on the rare side (Canaan) |

I'd suggest that they perhaps show him atleast and definately get health testing done if thats the route that they intend on taking.
A "rare" breed today is flooding the shelters tomorrow. |

| Re: Should she or shouldn't she I would think neuter because the possiblilty of cancer. He may be rare, but if he got cancer and died, then he'd be even more rare. |

| Re: Should she or shouldn't she I agree with Wimble Woof. Rarity alone is not a reason to breed. The dog still needs to meet the breed standard and have health testing and a good temperament to be breed worthy. I'd educate them on what needs to be done and the costs and then see what happens personally. |

| Re: Should she or shouldn't she well - he is scheduled for neutering on the 10th - seems hubby brought home a friend last night and the dog tried humping the friend's wife - opps - now to keep him from changing his mind - |

| Re: Should she or shouldn't she well i am glad they decided to neuter as being a rare breed is not a good enough reason to breed.... however, humping behavior, like any other behavior is trainable and is not an inevitable part of having intact dogs..... most often it is dominance behavior and not sexual at all.....
A little training will take care of the humping behavior as that is totally unacceptable.... none of my intact boys have ever humped anything because to be frank.... I don't allow it......

| Re: Should she or shouldn't she oh I agree - but if that is what it takes to get a neutering - then for now I'll keep my mouth shut & say something later about training |
