| dog sports etc Warning: lengthy post hehe. I want some advice though please read.
Hi I have had my new dog for 5 days. He is a male border collie cross. His previous owner was elderly and died 3 weeks ago and until I took him home as my pet he was just being fed in his back yard by a neighbour (since his owner had passed). I took him to the vet today for a check over, while he was there the vet scanned the dog for details although he did not have a microchip. The vet estimated that he is approximately between 2 - 4 years old judging by his teeth and the feel of his joints. He is in great health, perhaps a little too lean and very happy and energetic. I guessed prior to vet visit that he was a border collie cross and I was right. The vet is quite certain that he is predominantly Border coller cross with Blue heeler, exactly what I thought. He also thinks he may have a little staffy in him due to his brindle colouring on his belly. So he is a right little mutt hehe. As I have posted previously my new man does not like balls or chew toys at all, yet he is very very energetic. I mentioned this to the vet and he confirmed what other posters suggested that with him lacking the natural retreiver and gun dog instincts that this love for fetching etc was unlikely to develop.
Now the advice I am after is whether my mix breed adult dog is suitable for any type of dog sports, amature of course? Is he a little old to begin training? I really want to spend sundays with him giving him some fun and something that will stimulate his brain as he seems intelligent and so energetic that I worry he will be bored just having one walk a day and then left to his own devices in the back yard. I think it would become a hobby for me also, is there something that would suit him, where I could go to classes and eventually show him? Thanks for reading this far, any advice is appreciated |
