| Energy Level Do you guys prefer high-energy or laid-back dogs? I prefer very active dogs. But everyone has different tastes. So I am curious about yours. |

| Re: Energy Level I voted low, but I actually like my dogs to have an on-off switch.
Donatello is very active, when you take the time to get him worked up, otherwise he's the perfect lap-dog. |

| Re: Energy Level My guys are to the fairly extreme LOW end of energy for herding group dogs. They're great hikers, but aren't interested in running unless there is a sheep, goat or deer involved. They are WONDERFUL in the house, though. They just hand around and nap. |

| Re: Energy Level I like laid back dogs. I'm a couch potato, so very active dogs drive me nuts and I can't give them as much exercise as they need. My Shih Tzu has the perfect activity level. My Chihuahua is a little too much of a busy bee. |

| Re: Energy Level I basically want the dog to be "on" when I want it to be "on" I like doing high energy things with my dogs, but I also need them to be okay in an apartment/crate for most of the day. I guess I lean more towards athleticism than energy. It needs to be there, just not oozing all day long. |

| Re: Energy Level I like the high energy dogs too, Im a go go go person, I like to be on the go during the day with my dogs in tow. My terriers provide that for me. Both of them are always ready for fun. But as I sit here playing on the computer they are in thier beds at my feet waiting for me to say something like. "Ball" "work" or "bye bye" Thats all it takes to get them going.
Then I have Dozer who is my peace and quiet. My porch monkey that will sit next to me and watch for birds flying in the trees. Leaning on me as if touching me quietly is his lifeline.
Then I have Dragline. Who sits at a distance observing my every move. Watching for me to reach into the cookie jar. Waiting patiently for everything I do for him.
I like them all actually.. But I voted High energy. |

| Re: Energy Level I like high energy but I'm pretty specific about the KIND of high energy I have. I know this will make little sense but I like herding type energy and can't take the energy that comes with the high energy sporting breeds. I'd also be terrible with a husky but I love border collies, aussies, etc. I like a very thoughtful energy. Dogs that require more mental work than physical and breeds you can instill an off switch in (which you definitely CAN in a balanced border collie). I don't want a dog that needs to run 5 miles a day to be happy, but I enjoy dogs that need a job to do.
I think I could take a brittany or a toller but most sporting dogs aren't my type. |

| Re: Energy Level In general I prefer a higher energy level. I have had dogs of all energy levels. I make it a point to get a dog that fits my lifestyle at the time. When I worked 12+ hour days I had lower energy dogs. Now that I am home all day I have a medium energy and a very high energy dog. |

| Re: Energy Level Is it wierd if I say both? Although maybe, my "low energy" is someone else's idea of "high", since mine are all Husky mixes...
I LOVE how laid-back and calm Bandit is - he's the best for just hanging around and watching TV. But I also adore Loki's enthusiasm and like Laurelin put it, "mental energy", although he is also very hyper. Loki is a clown and makes me laugh sooo hard with his antics... and Bandit is my lovebug and my couch-snuggling buddy.
Willow is somewhere in-between, and Jasper is just off-the-charts... with him, a lot of that is anxiety, though. He's a high-strung, hard-keeper. |

| Re: Energy Level I chose high because that would ideal for me(when I'm out of school). For now it would be in the low-medium range but when the semester ends, we're doing hardcore walks and plenty of off leash time. |

A dog that's willing to go backpacking with me on the weekends. Or go swimming, or go visit friends. To work on training until I'm tired of it and then is happy to sit next to me on her bed and hang out.
I'd consider that high energy with an off-switch, but maybe medium energy is more appropriate. |

| Re: Energy Level Go-go-go all the time energy? No. Dogs that ping off walls are not my type.
Mental energy and enthusiasm? Yes. A dog that can solve a problem to get what it wants is my kind of dog. |

| Re: Energy Level I can't stand dogs that are like- unable to contain themselves. Dogs that cannot HELP but whine, bark, jump, spin in their crates or whatever. I HATE that behavior. This means I won't touch most terriers or spaniels. I need some self control. Goldens can definitely be idiots but the vast majority have an off button and can be trained to behave calmly. They also are not generally vocal. My Shepherd is very mellow unless invited to play, and my Whippet is a statue that breathes |

| Re: Energy Level i wanted a med energy dog that would like to play ball? i got the poster dog for ADHD and need to give him hours of full out running, mental games like puzzles and watch him pace around and around, but when it is Sun morning and i dont have to get up he will sleep next to me until 1 or 2 not even asking for a potty break. i wouldnt have him any other way and now seek out the high energy "crazy" dogs at the shelter i volunteer at.so i vote high |
