When we went looking, the rescue people asked us, if we were looking for a lap dog or one who wanted to go out and run around. We wanted both. Our evenings are pretty chill, but I love to go trail walking and hiking and we wanted a dog that wanted to go everywhere with us, including camping. Mandie is now curled up in "her" recliner (yeah for moving now we can have both in the living room); Sunday we went for an hour long trail walk and she was not ready to stop. |

Basil is pretty mellow when indoors and during down-time, and I love that about him. But compared to a lot of people I know, I'm pretty active. Not necessarily in terms of exercise, but I like to be out and doing stuff, like exploring the city, enjoying nature, discovering cool little shops, that kind of thing I don't want a dog that grunts and me and wants to snooze all the time, but I also don't want a dog that requires tons and tons of physical exercise. I like dogs that are active, but not.. intense or anything. Lol, I dunno, active to me is different than wanting to do physical exercise. That's high-energy.
Also, I'm really animated and enthusiastic, and I'm sure I'd absolutely LOVE doing some sort of dog sport, or activity that I can do with Basil. I'm kind of limited by his size, but I'm always thinking of different jobs I can give him. Speaking of which, all you weight pullers out there, I have a question! So you think a 19 lb Papillon would be able to pull a little wagon or cart? It just sounds so fun and adorable, and it's one of the things that I was thinking might be fun to try |

| Re: Energy Level I like medium energy dogs. A dog that wants to play and perform tricks, but also wants to cuddle with you and nap, and isn't too high maintenance in the exercise department.
Willow for me is all energy levels at different moments. When we're outside, she's medium energy. Loves to sniff and sniff and explore and move. When we're inside, she'll play for ten minutes, do tricks, then stop and want to rest/cuddle. When she sees a squirrel, or a toy she really likes, she goes crazy! That's probably how a lot of dogs are, but for the majority of the time, Willow is medium/low, and I am very very grateful for her behavior (most of the time). |

SOme days I cant get him out aslon as Ilike, so a 2km bike ride/run works well forhim, and he is fine to hang out the rest of the day. and not be a nut case. Days like today that I have off work. we will head to the dog park an meet up with some friends and do our nomal 5-8km hike, where Blaze will run with the pack of dogs the whole time hardly stopping. He will get home ad sleep, and if Im up for somthing else he will gladly go do it, but he wont push my buttons for any more fun. I also need to pick up my pay cheque. its a2km walk, so I think I will walk blaze there too. so thats a good 7-10kms of waking, running , swimming and playin for sure today. Tomorrow and the next day will be about the same, come the weekend, he will be lucky to get a 3km bike ride. So he is a great energy for me, he is calm an relax but also ready to goat the drop of a hat. |

| Re: Energy Level I accidentally voted "medium" when I probably should've voted "high." Sometimes people take "high energy" to mean "ill-mannered." While my dog is probably a high energy dog, who can run for miles and hike for miles, he's mild-mannered inside.
I'm a very active person and I couldn't handle a low energy dog. I'm not a couch potato and I don't like sitting around, so a dog needs to keep up with me.
I almost jumped out the window babysitting my friend's daschund. I hate picking up small dogs and having to carry them, but I know some people love this and particularly look for small dogs to be "purse pals." |

My dog was initially low energy when we first got him (about 12 days ago) but now his energy level continues to increase and I'm loving it. I'm pretty sure he hasn't "maxed out" yet either. |

But I live in the city, we walk everywhere. And I have a big dog who I walk for miles each day.
The daschund I babysat definitely could not or was unwilling to walk more than a couple city blocks. I just ended up carrying it everywhere. I don't know if it had issues -- none that I'm aware of.
I guess when I think of "high energy," I also think of endurance. Daschunds, after all, have short little legs which plays no small part in them getting tired out. Plus, don't their backs hurt walking up stairs or something? At that time, I was living on the 5th floor of a vintage walk-up... that dog could not make it up the first flight. I guess I have different standards for high energy, or I met the wrong daschund! |

| Re: Energy Level ummm, yeah....4 Border Collies (1 more coming soon)...i think that says it all....however, they do all know that when we're home it's down time or they entertain themselves (w/ the exception of Kody, his play time is all at home).... |

Mental energy and enthusiasm? Yes. A dog that can solve a problem to get what it wants is my kind of dog. | Same here.
I voted medium.
Wally can get worked up and be hyper/energetic, but then often wants a nap when given half a chance (basically me not paying attention to him) after such display and expense of energy.
But then he's ready to do it all over again once he's got enough sleep (which he usually "tells" me by shaking and snorting LOL)
Being a mix of both - I put down medium. |

| Re: Energy Level I love, love, love high energy dogs and all I want is a crazy ready to go at any moment pup. My dogs are the laziest dogs I've ever met in my life. They are almost annoyed when I want to get them up and outside to run around, lol. I run with Jack and Magpie every day, but that is about all I can get out of them. |

| In one breed guide, they warned Daschund owners not to let them alone with other small furry creatures. The small, docile and lethargic looking canine becomes a quick and efficient killer. |

| Re: Energy Level Mandie is definitely a doxie mix but the doxie is predominant. I swear her legs are like four inches long. People at the dog park love her because she really moves fast and she'll do it for HOURS if I let her. In fact all the doxies I've met are medium to high energy. They are go go go because they were bred to step up to badgers, which are pretty fierce and can definitely be twice as big as the dog. |

| Re: Energy Level I like a high energy dog. One that loves to run and play and learn! I'm not a big fan of dogs that are very low energy and just like to cuddle/sleep/watch TV.
But I also can't stand a dog that has high hyper energy all the time. Like if I had a BC without an off switch then I think I'll go out of my mind! |
