Are the Australian Shepherds similar to the Border Collies in this regard? Would a few hours of exercise and fetch along with training every day be sufficient? If not, what other sort of activities would provide the dogs enough stimulation? I only work 20 hours a week, so I have a lot of free time to devote to the dog. I would be interested in looking into the rescue you mentioned. Is it located in your state?
Yes Aussies need a job too, basically what that means is they need to know that something is expected of them. My dogs LOVE doing obedience, they love that thinking game. I would say if you only work 20 hours a week you have plenty of time to make an Aussie happy.

The rescue is active all over the united states. Here is their website http://www.aussierescue.org/

Re: Help choosing a breed?

I've read all of the posts in this thread and am amazed that no one suggested a springer spaniel. Perhaps I have a bias because we are enjoying our second springer. We just adopted her in June, she is about two years old, weighs about 40 pounds, exceptionally affectionate, loves being in the car, enjoys the outdoors and is great with kids (we have ten grandkids). Activitywise, she is very adaptable. We are an older couple and can't give her the activity level we would like and she seems to be okay with that. When we visit our daughter, who has two high energy springers of her own, our springer keeps up with them. We try to get in as many play dates as possible. My experience with springers is they love people, are not aggressive with people or other dogs, and our current springer is very intelligent. Take a look at www.springerrescue.org and good luck in your search. But what ever you do, please rescue a dog. There are so many dogs without a good home.

Re: Help choosing a breed?

The first breed that came to my mind is a Sheltie.

Re: Help choosing a breed?

You could look into Jack Russells. They are crazy, mine is a mix so she's not that crazy. Maybe a nice mix breed from a shelter/rescue would fit you unless you really want a purebred. Brittanys also come to my mind.

I think you would do well with any of the smaller herding breeds or maybe a brittany.

Re: Help choosing a breed?

I wanted to update you all that I adopted a dog yesterday. He is a 2 year old Border Collie mix. They were calling him Jack and I've decided to keep it since he already responds to it. He is a black and white rough coat. However, he has one blue eye, so his paperwork lists him as a merle. The shelter said he had no previous training, but he is doing very well thus far. I would upload some photos, but my camera is broken. I'm going to go to Best Buy sometime this weekend to get a new one so I can take some pictures of my new boy.

Thanks to all who commented. I appreciate it.

Re: Help choosing a breed?

He's probably not a merle, it's very common for non merle dogs to have Blue eyes. I think it's quite beautiful myself especially on a black dog.

Yay! I demand pics! Here's one of my BC mix, also from a shelter.
