Help - Nursing Bitch

We have a dog that gave birth yesterday--she is a chihuahua and has a litter of 5 pups. Everything seems well, she ate heartily today and has been drinking steadily--but I notice that she is panting while she nurses, rather heavily. She sticks her tongue out and pants, is this normal?

I looked up Milk-Fever and she doesn't have any of those symptoms aside from the panting...please help.

I think she is okay...the panting is sporadic, but I will take her to the vet anyway. This was a dog that I had found on the way home--we had her for maybe a week or two and she ended up getting impregnated by my other dog who I was *SURE* to keep away from...oh well...bad timing, bad accident but on the upside we are keeping all pups .

She is just hot if you ask me. The breeder I worked for, her Chinese Shar Pei's always panted if we didnt have a fan on. And sometimes even with a fan the mothers still panted. But good thing your bringing her to the vet just to make sure. O and im sure all those puppies nursing her are making her hot!

I'm not too sure about the panting, although sillylilykitty gave good advice. I'd get her straight to a vet to make sure everything really did go well.

It's great that you are keeping the puppies, but I do hope you plan to get her spayed and your other dog neutered!

Good luck!

Re: Help - Nursing Bitch

Is everything ok? did you take her to the vet yet?
I would guess maybe she is stressed out. Chloe pants very heavily when she is stressed. The vets offce is a pretty stressful time for her and holy cow....when she is there she looks as if she should be rolling on the ground begging for water in a raspy voice!! She might also be warm because hormones can do that to a woman or even a dog when they have babies. My mom had hot flashes for weeks after she had all of her children and so did a few of my aunts and friends especially the ones who breast fed.
The barn I volunteer at has a few mares that are in foal and one of the mares last year had an elevated temperature for weeks after she foaled. She was totally healthy no infection or anything bad like that.....just a really hot lady. Maybe that is what is happening with you little girl?
And I agree with Wimble Wolf....got any pictures yet?
