It is just something that they do and they think it is okay. It's unfortunate, and only education at a young age can save them, but sadly, no one wants to give them an education, so they don't understand the norms of today's society.
That's so very true. That is why I love this shelter that I volunteer at. They have a mobile vet that goes out the the res every other weekend and does free/low cost vaccines and spay/neuters. They also do a lot of free ones and 'Oh today is buy one spay get one free' so that the people are more inclined to get it done. They also pass out brouchers and flyers on why it is so important to be educated on spaying and neutering. And like I said we pick up 20-30 puppies every month (sometimes twice a month) and bring them to the shelter. It's so cool what they do! It's also a limited intake facility, so they don't euthanize any animals for lack of space...only ever if they are too sick or too aggressive...which has only happened twice in the year that my friend has been there. They also don't even adopt puppies out UNTIL they are old enough to be spayed/neutered. I was amazed at all this stuff they do...and it's all non-profit yah know...I just wish there were more like this one!!

And as for the outside dog issue...I don't really know. I mean I have met people with primarily outside dogs who live on farms, ranches etc. The dogs have shelter and are well taken care of, but are still outside. Most of the ones I have met come inside when it's raining or too cold, but spend most the time outside and they are well cared for. Then again, I think their owners are outside more than inside. I really think it depends on the situation...I personally wouldn't want an outside dog.

But they were bred to do a job to think on there own with out the help of man it has not one thing to do with there size its the use of the breed .

But this is not the case with this dog and her pups . This is a bad owner not properly caring for her or his dog in the right way . First not spaying so would never have pups ,then not treating her for fleas or vac. and worming so she would be healthy . This is someone that does not care to provide the care. But when this dog dies from something preventable would say I loved her so much she was one of my kids . Even though she had never been to vet. or given a bath. Hope this girl makes it in spite of her stupid owner .
That is a different situation, Pyrs, if I remember correctly, bond to the flock they are gaurding and live with that flock. In the situation with a family pet, the dog needs to be inside with the FAMILY to bond with it. I guess I should have made it more clear.

First of all, a Great Dane is not too large for a house. Dog ownership brings with it responsibility and committment for the life of the dog. This means proper attention, socialization, housing, food, grooming, exercise, training, and veterinary care. Accidents do happen, but when you've got an unaltered dog, you have to exercise extraordinary care and see to it that the dog doesn't breed.

So the answer to your question is yes. It is cruel to leave a dog outside to live. Especially one that is pregnant, has fleas, and is living under a house.

CrzyBritNAmerica it sounds like your shelter is soooo awesome, I would love to volunteer for something like that someday after I get established its just not the easiest thing to do right now. But I plan on helping as soon as I can by adopting Sadie Bear (She has been at the shelter for over a year and they think it is very probable that she will be a lifer) I love her very much. One less dog in a shelter and one more room for another.

Yeah it's hard for me to get to this shelter which stinks, because I'd do it a lot more if I could get there. I don't drive (it's awful since I'm 20, but hey) and it's roughly 10 miles away and the bus stops 6 miles before it too so it's really hard to get there on a regular basis. I do a lot of stuff with them out of the shelter though...Petsmart adoptions and other things they do in town. It's such a beautiful shelter too...they are working on setting up and buying more land so they can take in horses that need rescuing...which will be awesome! I only just found out it was originally founded by a couple who spent their whole life savings on the place and still give a portion of their retirement money to this day...I hope I get to meet them someday...although I doubt I could stop myself from giving them both a big hug!

Re: HELP! My dog's puppies may die...

you are totally not being a responsible dog owner. call the ASPCA and find your dog a new home where she will be kept inside where she belongs. there should be no such thing as an outside dog in the year 2007. get real. shame on you if those puppies are dead, because you wont take 2 seconds to look under the deck. im actually crying as i post this and im sure im not the only one

I think the consensus opinion is that the original poster is a troll whose sole purpose in life is to upset people on forums.

I don't think there's any truth to the story. I could be wrong, but I doubt it.

Re: HELP! My dog's puppies may die...

Hello and good morning. I would be concerned about the puppies. Is this the first time she has had puppies? If so some dogs panic not knowing what to do. She could accidentally step on them since there is not light under the house. She could just plain ignore them. I have been raising puppies for years and by my experience first time mothers don't do so good. The second time around they know what to expect.

Once again, I want to emphasize that there is absolutely no evidence that the events related by the original poster actually ever happened.

I wouldn't lose too much sleep over this one.

Lacking evidence to the contrary, we may need to close this thread so it doesn't keep alarming people for no good reason.

I agree - esp. since they never came back to defend themselves or anything

To the original poster: my suggestion to you is to call your local SPCA. They'll be able to help you with this matter.

Also to the OP- In my opinion, you probably shouldn't have a dog, or any other kind of pet. You don't seem like you have the ability to understand that animals have needs just like people do- they need shelter, food, water, and medical treatment.

If you cannot provide these things for your pet, then you should allow your pet to be rehomed. There are plenty of people who know how to properly care for an animal.

It is hard for me to fathom how someone could A) not spay or neuter their pet B) force them to be an "outside" animal (ie, no socialization, no proper shelter) C) and not get them any kind of medical treatment when they become impregnated D) not care enough about the animal or its offspring to check to see whether they are even alive.

This post reeks of animal cruelty, and I'm surprised that more people haven't called out the OP on his or her ignorant and neglectful behavior.

I agree and disagree. I agree that the OP should NOT have an animal. In FL, the weather is extremely hot and humid and heat stroke is a major danger.

But, I do disagree that an 'outside' dog is cruel. My border collie pup is excellently cared for.. Decent food, heart worm med, flea med, and proper shelter, and LOVES it outside. And she is going to be spayed as soon as she is old enough.

I agree though, this is a disgusting case of what seems like animal cruelty.

Do we need to set up a poll to see how many actually believe there was one word of truth in the original post?

This is your thread, but this is your thread on drugs! This one, the one we're reading right now. "Just say no!" to drugs.
