| Worried about friend's dog. Nothing else I can do so I guess this is just a rant. My neighbor (a different neighbor this time) has a 5 year old pit mix female. She had an injury to her leg over a year ago and still has not been treated. The owner claiming she can't afford it. But I've seen her blow money on totally unnecessary things...such as, she acquired 2 ferrets and spent hundreds on a cage and supplies, buys pot on a regular basis. Smoking pot is her choice but imo her pets health should come before that. New expensive video games, and a lot of other stuff. Her poor doggy is also infested with fleas so badly she has red welts all over her tummy. She has ocassional bouts of diahrrea and vomiting. And now she has a creamy discharge from her vaginal area. I'm really worried about her dog but she just says she can't afford it, and she's going to save up for it. I even drove her to a vet who set up an account in her dog's name so that whenever she has an extra $20 or whatever she can deposit it into the account so eventually the dog can be treated, but that was months ago and she hasn't deposited a cent yet. I've also contacted a dozen places online who help pets in need. One place is ready to pay for the treatment but they won't pay for the diagnostics such as x-rays, so thats all the owner has to pay. I'm just really worried about her dog, I wish she would give her to someone who will take care of her. |

Oh and the pot.. if there is enough of it.. may be of interest to law enforcement...... and if she goes off to jail her dog will at least be taken by AC and either be helped or have its suffering ended. |

I would report it or have someone else even do it. |

I've been thinking about reporting it to AC, but I've expressed so much concern I'm afraid she would know it was me, and I fear retaliation from other neighbors (gang members). |

| Re: Worried about friend's dog. Nothing else I can do so I guess this is just a rant I would call AC as the dogs health is important. I had a semilar situation where I had a neighbour who had a dog, and she never took it to the vet, and she had tumours galore on her stomach, and she was VERY overweigh as she was feeding her people food, barely ever taking it for walks, and she was also a pot smoker, and smoked ALOT of it. Her dog suffered alot, and I use to walk her as i felt bad for the dog, and the dog ended up having to be put to sleep the poor thing. This was all about 8 months ago, and she now had ANOTHER dog, and doing the same thing to this dog, and I barely ever see her walk her dog, and I don't offer to walk her dog as I'm not talking to her anymore as I don't like what she did to the last dog. It's such a sin when dogs are not being taken care of, as the owners are too busy with there life, and smoking pot instead of taking care of there pet. If you can't take your dog to a vet when there sick, WHY have a dog? |

| Re: Worried about friend's dog. Nothing else I can do so I guess this is just a rant I would give her no more than 72 hours to get the dog proper treatment and then report it to animal control. As far as retaliationn goes, you might be surprised at how many of those gang members would be on your side on this issue (but definitely not on the drug issue). |

| Re: Worried about friend's dog. Nothing else I can do so I guess this is just a rant How long has this been going on? What kind of injury is it?
I ask because my dog has a lame paw. He had an injury before we rescued him, he's been to the vet twice and it's been checked, there's nothing that can be done. So he just wears a boot so he doesn't damage the paw. However, we do get comments regarding his leg. Why does he limp? What's wrong with him? Why's he wear that goofy boot?
Additionally, when we first adopted him, he was grossly underweight. So we had this skin and bones dog with a limp outside on his leash. We got so many unnecessary comments! "FEED THAT DOG!" and "What's wrong with you people? Don't you know you gotta feed your dog?" It really sucked. He's still on the thin side, but he looks much better. We still get people asking about his leg, but its not nearly as bad.
My point is, before you call animal control, please make sure you have all your facts 100% straight. I'd be furious if my neighbors called animal control on us. We take excellent care of Wrinkles. He still shows signs of prior neglect, but it is not from us, we love him very much and take very good care of him.
Just something to think about. If there's definite abuse and you're 100% sure, then by all means, call a local shelter for advice. I'm hesitant to call animal control, my city confiscates animals, gives them two months, and then puts them to sleep. I'd prefer to contact a shelter that rehabilitates and adopts out animals. |

The dog needs surgery. I can't remember what the injury was exactly called. Something like a torn ligament, or a torn something, and she definately needs surgery. Plus she should be seen and treated for all the other issues going on with her. I've known this lady and her dog for 4 years. The dog is best friends with my pup. I know the story. Quote:

Thanks everyone for your comments )

I don't know what I'd do in your situation, I completely agree that the pooch in question needs veterinary care. Could you contact the local rescue or shelter? See what advice they have? |

| Re: Worried about friend's dog. Nothing else I can do so I guess this is just a rant You know what bothers me, think about it for a while The title on thread has the word "friend". If this "friend" does not have the compassion necessary to treat or take care of dog properly, what is there about her that would make her friend material. Fair weather friends are not really friends.
I'm not aiming this at OP, there is not a day goes by on forum that does not have a similar friend issue. Somebody who is abusing dog/dogs on a daily basis. A friend is somebody who would help/stick by you in tough times. I don't think idiots like this have the necessary qualifications to have the label friend tossed at them.
I wonder what these friends talk about when they get together with the big white elephant/abused dog sitting in the room between them.
Enough of that silly stuff venting, back to the dog. I would, the next time I saw the neighbor/friend look carefully at her face and get eye contact then I would say fixit or I will call AC and you will also lose me as a friend because I am a humane dog loving person and I find you lacking in the values that I require to be my friend. If she is a real friend maybe she needs this type of intervention to wake her up and change her values.
Now if this is just a neighbor/acquaintance only, there is no friend problem. Get on the phone and report her butt.
I'm sorry that you have to live next to this cruelty and hope somthing changes for the better (for the dog) |
