I called Animal Control to report abuse today. What next?

I hate that this is my first post, but I'm just really worried and I'm not sure what to do. Long story short, my best friend's brother has an 11 week old chihuahua/pomeranian mix and he's abused her numerous times. First time, he put on a shock collar and was lifting her up in the air and trying to get her to bark. He's also choked her, spanked her, and thrown her on the couch and at other people before. He also allowed her to drink beer at a party once. Today was the last straw for me. She peed on his bed and he completely soaked her with water and put on a shock collar and that's how I found her in the tub when my bff and I got back from school. Then she peed on the floor again and he was choking her and forcing her to smell her pee. I tried to take her away from him but he just yelled and pushed me and took her in his car and drove away. So I called animal control and all they said was they were going to have a welfare check on him. Can you guys tell me what a welfare check is? Has anyone had experience with calling ACC for abuse? And is there anything else I can do? I feel like Animal control isn't going to do anything to help.

I guess I would ask animal control if there is anything else that you can do that will aid in them getting this dog away from this kid. He is obviously disturbed and dangerous. His actions are scary as they could potentially lead to violence against humans. How sad for this little dog. I would probably call the police too to ask what can be done but chances are, they will refer you back to AC.

How old is this guy? Sounds like he has more issues than just with the dog. What does your friend have to say about it?

AC could ask for proof if they show up and he turns into a charmer. Im a bog fan of photos or video. If you have a phone that has video it might be worth sneeking a clip of him in the action. I wish the best of luck to you. I know how hard that is to see and experience.

Good for you for standing up to that jerk. I don't know what a welfare check is and I don't have any experience with AC. You could ask your friend to document what her brother does to the puppy and just keep reporting him. I'm sure once there are a few complaints against him they'll take the case more seriously.

Sounds like they are just gonna see if the animal is being abused.. Thats all they can do in the beginning until they see evidence and probably question that freak.

How old is this kid? Something needs to be done with him. Goodness

When i read your post my entire body went numb. Poor poor dog.

Thank gosh he/she has you.

Is it possible for you and your friend to take this dog when he is not home? My only concern however is for your safety if he is suck a wack. I feel so badly for that poor puppy. I worry that this puppy has internal injuries. Just keep in touch with animal control and hopefully something good will come out of this. Isnt it illegally to abuse animals? Maybe the police would be the next step. Good Luck

Re: I called Animal Control to report abuse today. What next?

Thanks for the responses so far. I've thought about taking photos/videos before, but when the deed is actually being done, I forget about taking my camera out and whatnot and just try to help the dog. Hopefully the next time he does something like this I can catch him in the act. But I highly doubt I'll ever be invited into his house ever again. He's 22, by the way and from the 3 years that I've known him, I've absolutely despised him. He's pretty bipolar. Sometimes he's extremely nice to the puppy and sometimes he puts her in the crate for hours. He's disrespectful to his parents and peers and he always thinks he's right. He will listen to literally nothing anyone says. Take today for example, when I was trying to take the puppy out of his hands and trying to tell him he's abusing her. He pushed me so many times and I was literally being dragged down the stairs and ripping his jacket (because I was trying to pull him back) while he was trying to leave the house. My bff, his sister and I even begged him to leave the dog but he wouldn't. He said, "it's my dog and I can do whatever I want with it." I'm shaken up and can't stop crying about this. I've taken care of her every weekend he's brought her back so far and have grown attached to her.

My best friend tried to defend me, but his brother is pretty violent, even punched him once, so my best friend is afraid of him. I also know that no one else will report him because everyone that's seen the abuse are family members and I know how hard it is for family members to report one of their own.

If he ever hits you then you can and should call the olice and report it! At that point you may be abe to get the dog away from him or you'll have proof to show the AC that he shouldn't be incharge of caring for any living being.

This guy lives with his parents? I gather that from what you've said, and if so, what the hell are they doing about it? I know he isn't a minor, but it is still their home, and I would think (though, a nod to my own mother, who does nothing) they wouldn't allow that kind of thing to go on if they knew about it.

Re: I called Animal Control to report abuse today. What next?

I just woke up and am feeling a bit more calm about the situation. But to answer some questions, he kind of lives with his parents and kind of doesn't. He's a commuter. We live in San Francisco and he commutes to Sacramento and stays there on the weekdays at his parent's other house. He comes back every weekend so he can go "clubbing" and have someone else babysit the dog, her name's Obi, by the way. His parents only speak Chinese and don't exactly see or understand some things that he does. They work all day and are only home at night. From what I've gathered so far, all I can do is keep calling Animal Control to be updated about the situation and hope for the best. Here's a picture to show how fragile she really is (I'm holding her in the pic):

Just keep calling Animal Control. Every instance, call and report it no matter what. I also agree that a call to the Police Dept. may be the thing to do. Animal abuse is illegal. They may be able to do something quicker than Animal Control.

I'm hoping too that you can get her away from this guy. Poor little thing...

Can you get the dog for the weekend and say she died or ran away and not give her back?

I would be very surprised if this dog lives a very long life. This guy needs to be put away.. and I mean seriously put away. His behavior speaks to me of a lot of things ranging from metnal illness to drug abuse and everything in between.. maybe all.

Be very careful of this guy. He is dangerously unpredictable. Very much so.

If you think about it, PTSing this little dog would be a very large step up from where life is now for her. Dognapping her might save her little life. Of course a large bat on owner's kneecaps is also a possible cure, at least give the jerk something else to think about while in hospital.

Oohh I wanna jump in my invisible jet and visit this guy!

Keep calling animal control. Keep trying to get pics but DO NOT put yourself in a position to be harmed. This guy has assaulted family members as well so he doesn't have an OFF switch. Document each thing you see. Date, time, circumstances and have your friend witness it. Keep trying.

I feel for you, what a terrible position to be in. Poor puppy.

Go to your nearest dog park. Spectate for a bit. Pay attention to the guys at the dog park. Pick one that's large, and obviously loves his dog. Tell him what's going on. And let him handle it.

Poor little thing.
You don't have an older brother? or cousin? uncle? Anyone who can straighten this guy out. I think that's all he needs.
