| Greenies: do not feed them to your dog! Hello, i am sure you all have heard about the Greenies brand dog treats. Well, I was waching the Early Show one morning and they were talking about over 2000 pet owners replied to the company that there dogs have been killed by the treats from blockage in there in intestines or asophoguse or something. i dont know why people dont ban the company. |

| Had not heard about Greenies being so harmful. Thanks for the news. I have only given them to my dog once, and about 2 minutes later he threw up all over me...and it was green. (Sorry, but it is such a vividly gross memory). Needless to say he didn't like it then and hasn't tried them since. He prefers something more like this http://www.heavenforpets.com/Dogs/ML...one-Jumbo.aspx
Something he can just chew on, not swallow. |

| Wow, I'm surprised at the number of people that hadn't heard about Greenies causing issues. That's pretty outdated now though. Before, they weren't digestible. They could just sit in a dog's intestines and cause a blockage. The new ones have different ingredients and are completely digestible- they turn to mush and cannot cause a blockage the way the old ones did. http://www.greenies.com/en_US/produc..._to_digest.asp |

There is also not enough research to totally eliminate the risk of the dog choking on the Greenie. It is a good product to not feed your dog.... |

Almost any treat can be a choking hazard; that's why it's important to supervise them. |

| Yeah I am suprised too, at how many people did not know. And what shocked me the most was this. They did a test where they put a Greenie in a cup of water, and put another teethcleaning product in another cup of water and let it set there for a few days. They came and the Greenie was not dissolved or wet any at all. But the other one was, so the water represented saliva from dogs staomach and the greenie did not digest. It just stayed as hard as ever, but the other one was nice and moist how it should be. Thats how greenies killed the dogs, from not bieng digested. I had just bought a package of them, when i saw it come on and had one in my hand to give to Princess, but threw them away after the show, and gave her a MilkBone instead. She likes those. |

| I have heard that greenies cause many problems in dogs but I havent heard if they do in cats exept one incident. A friend of mine that also has Siamese cats told me that after giving some greenies to one of her kittens (I dont know how long after) she had to take it to the vet. She ended up having to spend a couple hundreds of dollars on surgeries for that kitten. So ever since then she has never gave greenies again. Thats the treat I always fed my cat too! so I totally stopped feeding greenies after that. |

| No offense taken. But you see I accidentaly stumbled upon this awsome site when I was looking up animal info on the internet. I love cats and dogs. I have never owned a dog but have always wanted one but I have worked with dogs OB and conformation. I am studying to be a Veterinary Technician right now (except im on spring break at the moment ). The reason I am on here is to learn more about dogs and share my knowlege to people who need it. And after I found this forum I went searching for a cat forum and there is absolutly no cat forums as big or as used as this forum. Of course I have to sacrafice talking about my cat all the time but thats fine with me dogs amaze me with their beauty and intelligence. |

| Sillylilykitty - I have met quite a few cat owners who have had problems giving their cats greenies. One lady said her cat would throw up whenever he ate them and another person told me her cat had to have surgery because she had a piece stuck in her intestine, she had passed a few but the rest got stuck (ouchie!). My aunt has a bunch of cats and she said greenies give her cats the runs very badly. Her oldest cat became very dehydrated after having them a few years ago.
The real problem with them is that they do not digest at all when inside the animals stomach. And alot of dogs inhale treats instead of chewing them up into little bits. Luckily Chloe chews her treats into bitty pieces so she hasn't had a problem but after hearing they don't breakdown in their belly I stopped giving them to her. Better safe then sorry. You really have to watch your dog when giving them new treats especially edible bones like greenies or dentabone to make sure they are chewing them properly. If they chew it into three chunks and swallow each whole.....take them away and don't give them those treats anymore. |
