Exactly. Obviously there are instances where you have to relinquish the animal for situations beyond your control (serious, long term illness, owner passes away, severe, life threatening allergy) but I really think people need to examine their living circumstances before committing to a pet.
I hear it all the time....when people are talking about getting an animal....they say things like "Oh, I used to have a " (fill in the breed), to which I respond "What happened to it?".....and the response goes something like...... "We had to give her away".
Frankly, that's not acceptable to me unless the person meets the strict and rare aforementioned criteria. A dog is not a little black dress that you eventually tire of. It's a living, breathing mammal that, god willing, is going to be sticking around for a good decade or more....
For the longest time, I used to bemoan about how difficult it was to adopt dogs or cats in my area. Well, after reading things like this, I now understand why.
