Is my dog too fat?

Nice tool to help figure out if your dog is overweight or not.....

Sadly, most dogs I see are overweight. We struggle with a couple of our hounds' weight...they were spayed and can't seem to keep it off. But, for the most part, since I live with a "skinny breed," other breeds always look fat to me even when they aren't LOLOL

That test might be difficult for some people to figure out. Its says my Chloe is overweight and Sadie is obese but they are both perfectly healthy. Their vet cannot believe how healthy they are when I bring them in and I can figure out an obese dog from a healthy dog because of my line of work......wierd?

I think this is useful only as a very general guide - it doesn't take into account different breed shapes. I'm sure what Lovemygreys would consider perfect for her (?) greyhounds would be underweight for most other breeds. I must confess that Tess is on the "chunky" side of normal weight. Hoping that when Coco can run more she'll lose it. Too many don't-get-jealous-of-the-new-baby treats....

Chloe, remember, there is a difference when a vet is talking about a dog being healthy and a dog being overweight When they say healthy they mean good clean teeth, no diseases or parasites, good coat, bright eyes, etc. At least with my vet and others I have consulted that is the way they are. I think they do this because sooooooo many North American pet dogs are obese they want to let the owner know their dog is for the most part healthy and compliment them on that, and then tackle the weight issue seperately. I dont agree with this personally as being overweight can lead to health problems.

I love it when I hear people say ""He''s not fat he''s just very furry"" LOL I have a furry dog and I deal with dogs with even more fur than both mind put together LOL Fat does not just magically disappear because ones dog has a a lot of fur....ah well Personally I''d rather see a dog a lil on the skinnier side than fat, especially in larger breeds. Its amazing how many peopple see a well-conditioned dog and claim that he''s emaciated!

My one dog is diabetic so I have to watch her weight real closely, fortunately she is a good weight. He sister is getting a little fat now but vet say she is still within normal range.
I really hate seeing over weight pets, there is no need for it.

I hate seeing overweight dogs too. I like them the correct weight. My little toy poodle has an awesome metabolism, she is almost 11 and is still in perfect shape. She's had free choice food her entire life, but doesn't have the least bit of fat on her, and is quite the muscle-y little thing.
