a dogs job??

ok i have read here a few times that certain breeds of dogs... were bred for specific jobs, but do you know what a wired haired terrier or a labs job would be.... im tring to do more and more with saddie... and i know she loves water and ofcourse playing with her rubber chewy bone, but what could i be doing with her as well as fetch and things like that???

labrador "retreiver" means it was bred to retrieve objects, mainly birds and game animals. Terriers are generally bred to chase vermin / rodents in order to keep a farm or barn free of pests.

if you wanted to get into some sort of sport w/ her, based on her breeds, and if she has any inclination to burrowing, you could try the earth dog comp. and see if the wire haireds side come out in her.....but, there is coursing (some terriers chase/catch "game" above the ground) which would help burn energy.....there is always agility, rally, flyball, etc.....

Agility is always fun. I have done it with all of my dogs. I am just getting Chloe into it and she loves it and Sadie will be starting this summer.

Because she loves to retrieve so much you could try to hone her skills and do things such as ""blind retrieves"" and long distance retrieves much like you would see at a retrieving trial. Of course obedience, agility, rally-o, flyball, and freestyle dancing always remain an option. Some stuff I do with my boys during the off season of dogsledding is backpacking (using a special pack that is made for dogs), scootering, and I am going to be getting into weight pulling.

thank you all.... you have given me some great ideas for me to try with saddie.... she does love playing fetch. that is one of the ways i get some of her energy out of her...lol since she is a terrier and has lots and lots of energy...lol and it is quite cold out right now... so i cant really take walks with her as i would have to take 1 or both of my children with me... but i am going to do a bit of researching on different games and try them out with her... ive got to find some thing other than playing fetch...even i get bored with it... even tho she doesnt seem to... ha ha ha! but i really appericate the replies and will try to work some of them into our routine.......

A good indoor energy burner is a good game of "find it". You can use any toy, maybe her ball since she loves it so much. I use an old stuffed toy that Syd had when he was a puppy. We named it "gator" and the game is "Where's gator?" We used a clicker to train him to target the toy for a treat and eventually moved to hiding it. He will will play this game for an hour or so while I can sit and get other things done. It really tires him mentally.
