So I take him on a walk and...

I have just begun noticing that every time I take Junior out on a walk around the neighborhood across the street(it's a giant loop, easier to walk around than mine...) we will loop around twice and the third time or so(sometimes even the first time we loop) he stares at me.

He STARES at me. We will be walking and he will constantly turn his head to look at me like he's trying to ask me where the heck we are going. I'm not sure what he is doing or why he is doing it but often when he stares he goes into a state of hyper-activeness, I tell him "No" firmly then have him sit for about 10-20 seconds. After about 10 seconds I'll say "good boy", wait another 10 or so then start the walk again.

However, once we loop the next time he will stare at me and it's becoming quite frustrating as he will stop paying attention to the road ahead and often curve in front of me. It isn't an issue that he isn't paying attention as the GIANT loop only has 9 houses on it and only 5 of them are occupied(over-development in my area), but he really doesn't stop until I tell him "No" and have him sit as I previously stated.

I'm wondering if anyone has an inkling of a clue as to why he is doing this. I'm fine with it, but sometimes I'm talking on my hands-free with my cellphone and paying attention to him as he swerves into my walking space becomes somewhat tedious.

Maybe he thinks you are crazy for walking in a cirle repeatedly? Or is at least bored walking the same circle over and over.

Yeah, Trek continually looks up at me kind of like: "Am I going too fast? I can slow down. Or go faster. Faster is better. Are you ok?" like..another posted, just as a reassurance that they are pleasing you.

Could also be boredom..

Same here. I WISH my pup would look at me on walks. Only thing he'll look at is my legs to see where I am. Eye contact not at all.

I would take that opportunity to teach "watch" so that when other dogs pass you have a dog that is more interested in you then the other manic that is passing.

My pup does this too. I think it's cute.

Varying your walks is a good idea.

My dog does this too especially ona long walk. I think it could be one of the following:

1. She's wondering if she's doing a good job walking.
2. She's telling me she's happy to be on this walk.
3. She's tired and needs a bit of a rest.
4. She wants reassurance that this isn't a dream and we're really on a long walk (usually they are only 30-40 minutes but sometimes an hour or more)

If it's #3 so I pick her up for 5 minutes and then she's revived. If she's really tired, she'll just lay down without any warning.

It's cute though because she looks like she's smiling so I praise her for looking. It probably is a good idea to vary your route- different smells, sights, etc.
