i was watching the news last night ad found out there is a huge push to have pits banned here. so i decided for a project for myself i would put together all the facts i could adn send it to my local council. i live in New Zealand and as we only have about 4 million people in the whole country i thought if i tried someone might listen.

so what i thought you guys could help me with is positive facts, history, links to do with the breed.

my plan is to write about the breed and the common misconceptions about pit bulls. i want to take a survey to see how many people can actually recognize a pit bull, because often the person who is attacked will not even know what they look like.

any other ideas of what i could include would be great

You can also surf around these Pit specific boards and find lots of other useful info/opinions on the breed and it's characteristics. Since it's people posting their own thoughts you still have to make sure to take everything with a grain of salt...but it does give you a bit of insight into the differing views even within the APBT community.

Myths

*Pit Bulls have locking jaws
*are bred to kill
*were create to guard so they become over protective
*their brains grow too big for their skulls causing them to become aggressive
*Unlike other breeds they can't lock their jaws breeds but they can grab onto their victims while they chew with their back teeth. (this one contradicts the first one, I've heard it a few times and it was printed in a "pit bull facts" article written in Australia which I believe isn't too far from New Zealand.)
*they have 2 sets of jaws
*they can unhook their jaw to grab onto their victim
*they suck the blood out of their victims
*they can't be "domesticated", they are like a wild animal, no training or socializing can control them
*this breed is only good for fighting (or killing, or being attack dogs)
*red nose Pits are the "most aggressive" or "bred to fight"
*if bred/used for fighting they will be vicious and randomly attack a person without warning

I'm sure there are many others but these are just some

I think some positive facts would be their good nature temperament. That they were bred against human aggressive. That they make great service dogs, therapy dogs, K9 officers, they are very versatile and willing to please. These are some of the things you should find in the links provided by the others.
