traveling with your dog?

EDIT: This pertains to AIRLINE traveling. Sorry, I guess I should have put that in the topic title.

I have a question about this, and I would really love any type of information or links to information about how to travel with a 6lb dog from the US to Canada?

My aunt and her family has recently moved to Canada, and my mom and I plan on visiting them for Christmas. My boyfriend told me my dog will have to be quarantined. I have a 6lb dog I would like to take, and I have heard that you could actually travel WITH them and not have them stay in the back.

Check the laws in the states that you are driving through. A lot of states require that you keep your dogs restrained in the back while driving. And I don't just mean they can run around in the back, you have to get a special harness that clips onto the seatbelt and then on the dog. In reality it's a lot safer for your dog in case you get into an accident, for them to be in the back restrained.

You should check with whatever airline you are using about this and do this as early as possible to avoid surprises. Ideally before you even book the tickets. Most airlines accept small pets (crated of course) as carry-on or check in luggages.

PS If you check in the crate with your dog inside, it gets put in a separate climate-controlled area in the luggage compartment so they won't suffocate or freeze to death anything like that.

My cousins came from Panama with their kitten in a soft-sided carrier, one that can fit under the airplane seat. I don't think it cost much extra. You have to line it up in advance, because they only allow a certain number of pets in the cabin at once.
