I just have to brag!!!!!!

Ok, so I'm a proud Pit Bull owner, sue me

I tell you what, I don't know if its the breed or just Nubby, but man this dog is smart. See, when I had Carter, it would take him a while to understand what I was trying to teach him, but once he knew, he followed the command about 85% of the time. Even his dog aggression took me about 3 months to get under control and after that he was great.

Now with Nubby, it's the total opposite. Last night I was playing around and was teaching him "high 5". It took less then 5 times for him to understand the command and to do it on command from then out. I was shocked. I know no one has ever tried to teach Nubs this command since I have said different things like "shake" "paw" "high 5" with no effect. It took less then 5 mins to teach this dog a command! Now hes only 40% effect at following the command, you can tell he knows what you want but just doesn't want to do it (All he wants to do is lick and cuddle).

Now here is something amazing in my eyes. Before Carter was put down, I started to teach him how to run next to a bike. Wasn't working well at all. I was up to my 5th time before I decided before I killed myself or him we needed to stop for a bit. Today I will be gone for a lot of the day so I decided to try the bike with Nubby... It took Nubs 4 houses to learn to walk in a heel next to the bike 4 HOUSES... Not 4 blocks, 4 miles, 4 weeks, but 4 HOUSES!!!!! I could not believe it (I still can't) He went for about 1 mile in a perfect heel (I decided 1 mile only for his first time, didn't want to over do it). It was beyond what I expected. I am just so overjoyed!!! So now Nubby can run on the treadmill and bike!

Now if we can only work on the no jumping on mommy part and the no biting when someone is running part we would be set!

Re: I just have to brag!!!!!!

And you should brag. Nubby looks so sweet! I think what has alot of people (me included) scared when they come across a pit is when they have their ears cropped and are the lighter tone, they just look so much more menacing. Nubby looks like a big baby. I knew a guy who had a Rotti named Sluggo (it fit him) and he was the biggest baby I ever encountered. He would be protective but with me, he just slobbered all over me (I have that effect on dogs ). When I worked for a vet when I was in high school, they had a GSD on vacation from the police force. The vet (a man) could not go back to his cage w/out the dog going bullistic; with me, I rolled around with him in the back yard. Again, I have that effect on dogs...and kids; it's the adults I have problems with).

Nubby sounds very smart. My Daja (had her since Mom's day) is VERY smart and learns quickly. She is 80% consistent on some commands; others not so good.

Good luck with this beautiful dog!

You should be very proud of your furbaby-he deserves the praise and accolades. It's nice to hear good things about Pits for a change.

I haven't been here for a while and I actually came on to do a little bragging of my own.I took my two furbabies sheepherding last weekend. They both did great-especially since they had never seen sheep before. The black dog is LadyMindy, she's 2 1/2;the tan dog is MacGyver,he's only 10 months.

That is so cool! So, did they think the sheep were just weird looking dogs?

That's great Darkmoon. I'm so happy that you are having such a wonderful experience with Nubs! He sounds super smart. I've always wondered about the whole riding a bike with a dog. I'd be scared they would cross in front or dart of and pull me down or something.

Anyway, sounds like you are doing a great job with Nubs. Keep it up and give him a big hug from me, mac, roe and gabi!!!

MacGyver just kept wanting to go in the pen and chase them-either that or he wanted to run and play with the other dogs chasing them. When he went in he just wanted to chase.LadyMindy pretty much ignored them, wanted to play with the other dogs and people there until she got in the pen-then she was all business.Other than not having alot of confidence, she did a really good job.
