silver labs

i know we've talked about them before but i'm in an arguement with someone on another forum who had put a deposit down on a silver lab. the breeder is breeding two silvers together.

ok...are silver labs dog show worthy? i was talking about how i wouldn't go to a breeder who was purposely breeding out of standard dogs and she's saying they are in shows. i wanna get some facts before i go back to it.

Re: silver labs

ack! some people!

yes, i know silver labs are pretty, and yes they're "rare"

but i did not once say i didn't think it would make a good dog. all i was trying to tell her is that i would stay away from a breeder who is advertising that he is breeding two silver labs together for silver pups.

oh, and this whole thing started because she put a non refundable deposit down on a litter that didn't exsist yet, and it's been over 3 months. the female was suppose to go into heat within the last 3 months and she still hasn't. so she was wondering if she should cut her loses and look for another breeder...um...HELLO! you put a non refundable deposit on a puppy that hadn't even been conceived yet and you think this guy isn't in it for the money? that silver labs are show worthy and all that?

AGH!

Re: silver labs

aside from the fact he's breeding silvers, what do you think of this breeder based on his site?

Re: silver labs

Sorry I guess I just believe that anyone is breeding a breed of dog that is completely out of standard for that breed is NOT an Ethical breeder and should be avoided at all costs. It is promoting this bad breeding practice by giving her/him your money. Same thing as buying a dog from a puppy mill and saying "the pup can still be a good pet" Well, yes, it can. It is still wrong. IMO

Re: silver labs

I haven't met a silver lab yet, I've met a white dobe tho...

It think it runs along the same line a BS thinking tho to produce them as well....

Doxies in Japan are being horibly inbred to produce many strange color combos. Lots of birth defects are popping up.

Bad. I can't even find the parents pictured on the site. No mention of doing anything with his dogs- show, field work, whatever. He just mentions that they're pets. No mention of breeding goals or anything like that...

Yup! Let's face it. If you are breeding one fault into the breed because you suddenly think it is "profitable" chances are you are bringing along with it, a few other faults you didn't foresee.

Re: silver labs

Breeding for color alone creates so many problems...Couple that with the fact that these dogs are not bred to the standard...(actually, they are purposely being bred against the standard) and you can guarantee someone is more concerned with lining thier pockets than the well being of their dogs. How someone can buy into that crap is beyond me.

I also don't get why anyone would want a silver lab...it doesn't look like a lab. It looks like a mutt...

Re: silver labs

well thanks everyone!

i feel better about this arguement i've been having with this lady now. she's always going on and on about the research she does for stuff like this. and we're actually pretty good friends. so i didn't want to be throwing something in her face without stuff to back it up.

Re: silver labs

I wasn under the impression that Silver Labs actually had Weimereiner blood in them somewhere? Or is that just an unfounded rumor.
