I need help

I've recently acquired a box full of puppies (nine puppies counted), and I need some help. They are around 2/3 weeks old (just opened their eyes) and still need to be bottle fed. They look to be pit bull mixes. They also have a lot of fleas. I'm currently using a bottle that is for small newborn animals (kittens etc.) and I would like to know if I should be using a bigger bottle, I would also like to know if there is anything I can do about the fleas.

Re: I need help

These questions would be best answered by a vet, they should be seen by a vet as well.

Re: I need help

Oh my...you've got a mess on your hands! I would first call your vet and try to get in to see him/her. Those puppies need to be checked over. Your vet also might know of some mama dogs who would be willing to "foster" an extra pup or two. When I was fostering kittens for the humane society they often tried to get nursing cats to accept orphaned kittens. Sometimes it works. A mother dog's milk and teaching is the very best way for a pup to grow up. Besides that you'll go broke trying to buy formula for that many puppies! They can't have cows milk I'm sure you know.

Are they eliminating on their own yet? If not you'll have to stimulate them to do so. You don't want constipated puppies!

Seriously...call your vet. They can help and will know exactly what you need to be doing. I so do not envy you and your sleepless months ahead.

thats incredibly rude

as far as the pups are concerned

they need a flea bath.... so you should definitely call your vet and get some medicated bath for them....

as far as pooping and peeing they should be doing that on their own at this age... so just keep an eye on it....

the best nipple for them is a nuk I think its called... go and get a regular bottle and a nuk I think is the name nipple at a cvs they are cheap and they are more natural a wee itty bitty kitten nipple is not big enough

there are plenty of milk supplementers out there... so you can use goats milk from the grocery.... warm at room temp. or you can buy a canned milk supplement either will work... my puppies never liked the powdered ones....

at three weeks old the puppies will develop the ability to lap up food... so you can take some kibble soak it well in water and pulverize it down to a liquid consistency and see if they will lap any of that.... the sooner you can get them weaned the better....

I am happy to help in any way that I can .... feel free to PM me and I will give you my email address so yo ucan email me direct....

good luck
s

Re: I need help

Thank you so much for the help. i'll get them one/two of those, and i'll try the food as well. I got the puppies from the police department. My cousin works there and called me over to see if I could foster the pups for her. If I didnt they were going to be destroyed. she said they found them abandoned near a school.

Re: I need help

For fleas you should grab a flea comb and comb each of the pups out until you can get them to a vet to have the fleas taken care of. Using food grade diatomaceous earth will help kill the fleas too, you can also add it to their milk and it will deworm them without having to use chemicals.

Re: I need help

I wouldn't think 2-3 week old puppies would have that much hair that a flea comb would be useful since they have hardly any hair, would it?

Oh my gosh. You've got a lot on your hands. Thank you for helping them. You are doing a great thing. Shalva is a good resource...she'll lead you in the right direction. I wish I would have known about this place when I found my five puppies. They were five weeks old...and I faired okay. But, you've got your hands full. Have fun and good luck.
