Question GSD Ears Taping vs. Glueing

Hello
I have a 7 month old German Shepherd that has soft ears I guess. I have been researching this because only one goes up occationally. When we got him both ears where partially up and as he was teething one was more apt to be up. I was just wondering if anyone has had experience with either? My last GSD's ears where up and stayed up since a pup. He was american and my new pup is German line. If there is a difference in the ears. Any advise or cautions are welcome. P.s. No matter if his ears are up or down we still love him!!! Just wanted to add that.
Thank you Grizzlys-mom

Re: GSD Ears Taping vs. Glueing

His ears might decide that its time to stay up as he grows and matures out. It might be from the German lines in him. He sounds like a cute pup. I love GSDs..xD

Re: GSD Ears Taping vs. Glueing

I am not familar with GSD ear taping or glueing, but I am with Collies.

I am pretty sure the same 'timeline' applies for both though(GSD folks will know more for the breed). I think it is too late to do anything for your dogs ears, by 7 months their ear muscles are pretty much done developing, and the cartilage is already set.

I know with Collies, by 7 months if the ears are not tipping or sitting up properly, they most likely...never will. I imagine that is for GSD's too with getting their ears to go up straight.

*G* I have bull terriers and we have had to tape a few of them to give them some support, it is not difficult and after a short while the dog doesn't fuss much with it. I have a link to a GS site that talks about this with some humor and explains the timeline and what to do, when, hope this helps! Here it is:

Re: GSD Ears Taping vs. Glueing

7 months is not too late. 6-7 months is when we start taping. Generally, I'd say just let the ears be.

The German dogs tend to have better and stronger ears because they DON'T tape. That's how they keep strong ear cartilage. The dogs that stay down clearly aren't bred from so they don't pass on weak ears.

Talking Re: GSD Ears Taping vs. Glueing

Thank you all for all the information, Alot of it to read through a decifer. I actually like the breathe rite strip option. The least evasive and that way the ear would still get air. I will keep everyone updated on those lovely (floppies) ears. I will post pics when I learn how.

Thank you again

Re: GSD Ears Taping vs. Glueing

No worries about breeding he has been fixed, I have either had GSD's or GSD's mix and just love them, I don't need to breed them, that would take more school and such. To old for that!!
