| This is why I get so upset! Things like these is why I get upset and why I’m very blunt about it. Some people probably don't understand. I'm very passionate about this breed. So here is just one reason why. Pit Bull Attacks Child
People who have no business owning dogs are ruining it for everyone else. Irresponsible Pit owners threaten my dogs, the right for me to own my dogs, and the breed as a whole. You can try to educate but some people could care less and others choose to ignore the facts. This guy knows his dog is dangerous but didn’t want him PTS. He said If the dog did this to his son again then he would consider it! WTH is wrong with people. Why would you put your kids life and other peoples well being in danger? I really don’t understand his POV of at all. Bad dog owner, bad parent, careless. Whether they are merely ignorant or blatantly irresponsible they damage the breeds reputation even further that the responsible owners are trying to fix. It seems for all the breed ambassadors we have, all the good bullies, all the people fighting BSL, all the people coming up with alternatives for breed bans, all those trying to help out other owners and all those trying to educate the general public on the real Pit Bull it only takes one or two incidents to set us back even further. Because it will always be seen as "another Pit Bull attack", another smack in the face to those trying to do good, another nail in the coffin of the APBT and another reason that "proves they are dangerous". Sometimes it is very frustrating and seems impossible that the bad reputation will ever be gone because there are too many out there who don’t care to protect the breed. We can’t control what the irresponsible people do yet their decisions affect us and our dogs. This seems to be the way it goes with many things (everyone pays for a fews mistakes) not just with dogs but unlike the other things dogs are living beings, part of the family that can’t be replaced. Lots of these owners don't care, they will move onto some other breed to ruin or any dog will do if they can't have a Pit, for someone like me who lives for their dogs the idea of not having that breed is scary and worrisome.
While this story isn’t in this country it is a prime example of why some push for BSL. It might not actually make things safer but it seems the quickest and easiest fix.
I'm not sure what the actual solution is anymore. |

| Re: This is why I get so upset! *SIGH*,another idiot who owns a breed he shouldnt!!
Your right Spice, bad owner and parent its people like that who make owning the breed a depressing time.
Everytime a SBT attack happens here im in hiding for a while as the public have every right to be aprehensive toward the breed.
There are people who shouldnt exsist at all IMO and its normally those people who choose a breed such as a Pit,thus lending a hand in its already downward spiralling reputation. |

We've had a couple of attacks here in my area this past year or so. Same story different place. Its amazing that considering these events that our BSL did not make it to vote (thanks to many advocates here).
I too am afraid that there is no reasonable solution. I'm sure for every responsible breeder out there trying to better the breed in reputation and lines, there is probably another breeding for a meaner, bigger, more aggressive fighting cash machine.

My dogs aren't around children much and I'm never sure what a child might do to annoy my dog...kids can move so quickly and be noisy. I'm sorry to hear about this baby...it is a shame. IMO, the owner of the pit should be destroyed as well...it's his fault the dog is like it is...not the dogs. I may not be a fan of pits but to allow a child around a dog as big as this is just plain stupid. |

Argh | I think people not understanding fighting dogs is a small part of the problem. They think the dogs are mean and aggressive. Since they believe that in turn they think the breed itself is dangerous. As people often say they are bred to for aggressive and to kill. Adding to their fuel even though they are off the mark. They don't care to know the truth because they just want all Pits gone.
There are plenty of those crappy breeders out but the irresponsible owners are just as much a problem. Their dogs are attacking people/animals. Without the bad breeders though there wouldn't be the bad owners because they wouldn't have a place to get their dog or puppy from. Its like a never ending cycle. Quote:

Then didn't want to have the dog put down. You are trying to prevent a bite from possibly happening and he knows his dog will attack his kid but doesn't care.

| Re: This is why I get so upset! I couldn't agree more. We see a lot of pitt bulls at the clinic I work most of them are very loving people oriented dogs. I guess the biggest problem is when a breed becomes popular the wrong type of people own them. It's happened to quite a few breeds sadly. |

I knew what you meant. Just wanted to add on about the bad people getting them from bad breeders. |

*shakes head in utter disgust*
what are we responsible apbt owners to do?!
if I can't ever even see a pit bull walking merrily down the street, I don't ever want to lay eyes on another dog again. no other breed will cut it for me. no other breed suits me as much as a pit bull's loving heart and stunning grace...they are gonna turn me into a dog hater if this keeps up and pit bulls become no more....=(

We just have a child killed by a Pit around here in the last month or so. So get this (I've been waiting for a topic to come up to post this)
I was walking Nubs a different route home and came across 2 women in their yard. Can you guess what was the first thing that came out of their mouths was? "Killer" My reply "Only if you can die from doggie kisses" Then came the "Aren't you afraid that he's going to turn on you some day?" Which put me into instant information mode. So this goes on for about 5 mins when I start to hear barking coming for the house and here is the kicker. The lady who was calling my dog "killer" Then said to me "Could you please move on? I have 2 Pit Bulls in the house..." I couldn't help myself and said "Aren't you afraid they are going to turn on you one day?" and walked off.
Yeah it was a "WTF" moment. I don't understand people.
Tonight I was talking to a girl about Pit bulls. She was like "Yeah I love Pits. I'm thinking about owing one one day". Don't get me wrong she is a GREAT girl, but not confident in any way and a Pit would run her over in a second. So I ended up talking her out of it and she understood why in the end why there are so many pit bull attacks.
And don't even get me started on a Judge Brown show I came across the other day about a Pit bull attack. SO many WRONGS on that show I ended up turning off the TV (because I was yelling and cussing) and sat on the floor with Nubs and cried. People don't understand what they are getting into and it just makes me SO MAD...
Ok I'm going to stop ranting now... or well try too... |

I heard a guy once at the pound calling a tiny pit puppy a killer in a cutesy voice, you could tell he was serious tho. He looked at me and laughed. I called him ignorant and walked away. aaarggg people! |

I think they are the most gorgeous dogs out there. Especially the one in the story. He was ADORABLE. But he was in the wrong hands, and sadly, that cost him his life.
If he was training him to be a guard dog, why wasnt he guarding the little boy instead of attacking him?? Ugh people are so stupid.
This is just going to fuel the pit haters fires though. But one thing, all the pit haters always say, their jaws LOCK and they NEVER let go...interesting.. than how did this little boy make it out alive? The fear of pitts is fueld by all the myths. I hate it! I think ANYONE who breeds should need a lisence to do so. Let a/c get off their butts and start making sure people are breeding properly. They say it isnt a law, but it NEEDS to be. Im not saying ban pitts. I am saying regulare the breeders. WHich I know is near impossible cuz theyll do it anyway. I wish their was a solution. |

I'm not sure what the actual solution is anymore. | You've made a lot of really valid points and reading your post gives us a glimpse of what it must be like to have a breed of dog that you think is wonderful and loved, but is not viewed favorably by the public in general because of the lousy dogs/owners spotlighted in the news. I can imagine at times it is quite painful. You can only do your best as an owner to show that good examples of the breed exist - seeing is believing . |

| Re: This is why I get so upset! Oh the main reason I posted this is that they are now pushing for BSL there. Because of the most recent attack on the boy. So that just goes to show this irresponsible parent/dog owner has possibly effected the responsible APBTs owners ability to own their dogs over there. (this was in New Zealand) Quote:

I wish their was a solution. | It is tough to deal with such people and possibilities but it won't deter me. I thought he was a very nice looking dog too. If he were in the right hands he might have been PTS sooner rather then later. As I ask myself the same question this is supposed to be a guard dog, proper guard dogs should be loving with their family, that is who they are supposed to be protecting the family/property/home. He was probably an unstable dog from the beginning and encouraged to be aggressive, trained by the owner, a layman who made an even more dangerous dog who is unpredictable as many do trying to train their own attack/guard dogs. They don't have dogs of proper temperament, confidence or nerve just a poorly bred dog with aggression issues that they amplify. We really can't know the whole story and maybe in the right hands the dog could have been ok and worked through any issues he might have had. It is just hard to stay.
Yes locking jaws, maybe the Dad ran and got the key? There was also the person on another forum who was told that they have a 2nd set a jaws in their throat that nothing gets past. Wonder how they eat? Ironically the vet tech had their Pit Bull there and the woman pointed into the dogs mouth and said if it were a Pit Bull it would have a 2nd set right there. I'm sure she felt foolish afterward finding out it was a Pit. |

| Re: This is why I get so upset! I have nothing new to say but I’ve seen many pits with irresponsible owners. Some of them live in my neighborhood. I feel sorry for the breed and those who own them responsibly. I don't know why but the breed seems to attract a lot of bad guys or bad guys-wannabees. They dress them up with spiky collar and etc to make them look tough and mean. I know owning pits is more of a fashion to them. Not cool.
My boxing coach has told me that the gym's owner was selling pit puppies (I guess he bred his dogs in his backyard) to kids in the gym for $100. Sigh...
Not everybody has enough knowledge about dogs in general, not just pitbulls. I've seen and met many people call my dog "a huge pitbull". (Well, Lennox is not a pitbull at all but oh well, what can I do?)
I still remember that the tragic death of Miss Diane Whipple in San Francisco few years back, it was first reported as a pit attack. (I was living in SF at that time) Then I later found out that those dogs attacked her were not pits at all. They were Presas. People don't even know what breed they are talking about.
I just hope things like this will not happen so often. I know it makes responsible pit owners feel very uncomfortable.
