| I don't get non-dog people My 5 year old is in swim lessons at my friend's house this week. She has a 2 year old mutt - same type as Ella. Anyway, Tanner is a GREAT dog....very sweet and friendly and only a tad mischievous. It's not easy for any dog to be around mothers and toddlers with snacks dropping everywhere and chewable flip flops there for the taking! Anyway......I loooove going there because I get to hang with Tanner while my daughter has her lesson. The other mothers can't stand him and shoo him away every time he just walks by them. One 2 year old hit him smack on the head and the mother just giggled! Wth?? This is a sweet little 19 lb mutt and everyone treated him as though he was rabid.......and looked at me like I was insane because I kept grabbing his cute face and kissing him. (you know the look....the "stay away from that crazy lady look".)
Anyway, just bothers me that I have yet to meet a person in real life that loves dogs as much as me. Bothers me to see people disgusted by them and teaching their children that too.
Thanks for listening to me rant. No one else will! |

| Re: I don't get non-dog people Luckily I am mostly surrounded by pet lovers. I do know the type of people that you are talking about though.
Cody comes to work with me everyday, and while 99% of the office totally loves him and likes to play with him and pet him, there are a few people who I can tell HATE animals. Since we are at work though they just totally ignore him, but you can feel the vibe. One lady used to talk to me all the time, and now hasn't spoken a word to me since I got the dog... strange |

| Re: I don't get non-dog people I just don't get it - Tanner is soooo freakin cute and they all treat him like a leper or something. He doesn't jump or bark or anything. When he walks near these women they push him away and act like he's the grossest thing they ever saw. I feel so bad for him! Meanwhile I am all "Tanner!!!! How's the best boy doing???" and kissing him on his cute little nose. Oh yeah....these women loooove me. |

For what it's worth, he likes Baxter because he knows him. I don't know how many times I brought him to the office before Baxter became his friend.
People are so odd sometimes! |

Myself on the other hand, can't live without them. |

| Re: I don't get non-dog people It's worse when you're a cat person.
Even working with animals, and therefore, you'd think you'd mostly see people who care about their animals, there's a definate "second class citizen" attitude towards cats. Maybe third or fourth class. Or thirteenth.
But seriously, people are much less likely to spend money treating their cats. Much less likely to keep them indoors. Much less likely to spay/neuter. Much less likely to even show up for their appointments.
I've rescued three formerly feral cats (Gypsy, Pippin & Fergus -- Gracie was stray but tame), so it's very painful to me to see how strays/ferals are treated like vermin around here. There's no TNR program (trap, neuter, return) around here, and feral cats are euthanized at the shelter, no exceptions unless they're young kittens.
But I am happy to see the amount of great owners and people who are just as crazy about their pets (some even moreso!) as I am. Aside from the whole "saving lives" aspect of working at an animal hospital, meeting great owners has to be the best part of the job. |

Needless to say, that didn't work out.
to the OP: I know what you mean about "dog-haters". I admit that I'll sometimes avoid a dog if it's really slobbery and over-friendly (ie not respecting personal space) or sheds a lot, but even then I usually pat the dog and say hello. I don't shoo it away with a look of disgust. I don't get some people that come to our house and if my dog licks their hands they wipe their hands on their pants and look grossed out. He's a min pin, he doesn't have a lot of spit :P |

I know what you mean though Lorina about cats... why the heck does everybody have to publicly announce their hatred of cats? I think that some people have met one mean cat and assume that they're all like that, when in reality most cats are very loving and affectionate.
I still cry about my cat Lucy that I had for like 11 years, she was my best friend. I don't know if I"ll ever be ready for another cat, which is why I got Cody boy instead |

| Re: I don't get non-dog people I agree with Lorina. Being a cat lover myself, I not only get the weird looks from non dog people but from dog lovers as well. You would think that people who love dogs so much would also understand how some people love cats but thats not so. I dont understand how people can not love animals, they are so awesome, all of them are. But I do know a lot of animal lovers (being at a vet tech school) but you would be surprised at how many of them dont love animals all that much. |

She says they shouldn't even be kept as pets! ..omg did she get a talking to from me LOL. She and a bunch of people came to my house on the weekend and I brought out Owen-- haha she was so afraid of him!. I hate when people speak negatively about things that they know nothing about, or bother to learn about--ugh!. |

| Re: I don't get non-dog people I can understand non "dog" people (i.e. not dog crazy like us), but people who just dislike them? They are weird and messed up, IMO. In fact, anyone who doesn't have a spot in their heart for an animal goes way down in my book. You know the type of people I'm talking about...."If its going to cost you that much in vet care, why not just shoot it?" or "I kick every cat I see," or "Ten points if you hit the squirrel!"
I have a friend that doesn't understand why I love my animals so much. She excepts it as a part of me, but she just doesn't get the bond that happens, nor does she want to understand it. I feel bad for her. |

She was "KICKED" out of my house! | Man, I couldn't even imagine thinking about kicking a puppy. She's messed up. I can kind of understand if someone may be a little nervous around Aslan. I wouldn't be, I'd be hugging him and playing and such. Some people would probably be nervous due to his size. My parents don't get my love of dogs..but they appreciate my compassionate personality and realize I'm a good person for taking them in. They make the effort, which makes me happy. |

| Re: I don't get non-dog people I find myself usually surrounded by animal lovers as well...or atleast people who don't mind them anyway...
When I encounter people who absolutely disdain them I just walk away...they probably aren't worth getting to know anyway! Just kidding, but I have noticed those who really hate animals have really awful attitudes toward alot of people too...not just those who love animals...could be just coincidence, but I'm not so sure...

I honestly believe people like that are empathically stunted on some level. |

| Re: I don't get non-dog people How about the people who claim they LOVE dogs but treat them so wrong?
I have this friend at work who took in a Bassett from a bad home while she already owned a JRT. I ran into her the other day and asked how the basset was doing. "She's outside." I was like "huh????" she then told me that the Bassett was just "too big" so she is keeping her outside 24/7 so the dog is out of her way. She is also keeping the little JRT outside and is thinking about doing this for the winter too. I about flipped out. Honestly I don't understand people!!!!!!! Dog "lovers", Dog "haters"... I can't wait for this weekend for the big dog show so I can be around other people that love their dogs as much as I love mine. |

Myself on the other hand, can't live without them. | But they are nice enough to let you have Ringo! My friend never had a dog her whole life and was scared of BAILEY when she first came over. Funny thing is that she grew to love Bailey and they rescued a pit/ridgeback from the pound and named him frankenstein! She loves dogs now!
And the cat thing. I dont understand either! Mittens ventures outside sometimes, but theres no other cats in my neighborhood. Theres this cat on my moms street that I cant catch but every year around this time she always has kittens. I wish I could catch her and spay her. Shes so cute, this small little black girl.
Erik hated cats. His mom lived next to someone who had her cats pee on newspaper and she always burned them in her backyard and her cats used to jump out at eriks mom when she was walking down the street and scratch her. SO that was instilled in Erik. Well he met my cat charlie, fell in love with him, we moved out, got Toby, got Mittens, and now he is DEFINTATELY a cat person! He loves them! |
