I'm tired of irresponsible dog owners...

I don’t like complaining but I just have to say. I’m so tired of dumb dog owners at dog parks. Lennox and I were at one of local dog parks on Sat. The dog park is a part of regular park and it’s located across the picnic area. When we were just about leaving, an adult man and his two little kids walked in with their intact male dog. (I’d not mention the name of the breed) The dog came up to Lennox and started sniffing, etc but we ignored him. I put the leash on him and when I turned around, I didn’t see the man. Instead, I saw those two kids and the dog. When we were walking out the gate, those kids were following me. I was like “what?” Yes, everybody left except the dog. Then, I saw the man with a woman on the picnic bench across the street. And those kids joined them and started eating something. Geez, they left their intact adult male dog alone in the park, unsupervised and don’t care? We were the last one in the park but what if there were still other dogs and their owners in the park and their dog started causing some problem? I was absolutely speechless.

I also hate to see some people who don’t train properly or give discipline to their little hyper dogs. One hyper Jack Russell was annoying every other dogs and more than few dogs growled at him because the little guys never leave anyone alone and keep jumping on them. So his attention turned to Lennox and he started jumping on him, nipping his ears and legs. Lennox has high tolerance and he just let the little guy do whatever he wanted to do and never became aggressive. He didn’t even try to overpower him. I was a bit annoyed because the owner couple didn’t seem concerned even their dog was nipping my dog constantly but I just let it go because I wanted to see how Lennox would react to the situation like that. (I was happy to see him just holding back and being very tolerant.)
Actually same thing happened at the other dog park yesterday and the little dog’s owner didn’t do anything. I really don’t like the fact smaller dogs can get away with this type of behavior. I really think that regardless of the size, this type of behavior should be corrected right away by their owners.

Sorry about the vent but I just wanted to say.

If my large dog acted like one of those tiny dogs did. Someone would probably run scared and call the police. I guess its because a 10 pound dog is not very intimidating but a 130 pound dog is kinda scary. nevertheless A dog should be on a leash anytime in public in case they get out of hand the owner can correct the dog with a tug on the leash. and why take your dog to the park at all if you are not going to pay attention to it. Taking a dog to the park is like taking a kid to disney land they love it.

I totally agree with you. I took Ash to the dogpark for the first time on Sat. There were dogs of all sizes there and truth be told, I was totally impressed with how well behaved they all were and how nicely they played.

I did get frustrated when a smaller dog started jumping all over the other dogs and being a nuisance...Where was his owner? On his cell phone by the fence not paying one bit of attention. When we were leaving, the dog tried to leave with us...Still, he was oblivious. My son had to carry him back into the fenced area.

Small or big, I believe if a dog is not behaving in an acceptable manner, they definitely should be corrected.

Re: I'm tired of irresponsible dog owners...

and imagine- there is kids like this running wild anyway- as long as nothing is said- politely- we basically accept unacceptable behavior. Would I say something? You bet- nice walk up, ask them to kinda keep their dog off my dog please, otherwise dont worry about my dog, worry about me heck- if you bring kids to a playground and you have other kids act like that and be annoying, dont you think we should say something? A friend of mine whose son was a PITA came to complain to me about it and I told her the other people where right and I had told her before that her kid was a pita and she made it hard for her kid by protecting him all the time. She thought about it for a few days, but it was a eye opener and she changed- so did the kid. As long as the "other" dogowners are not made aware of annoying habits, the other owners just believe we think their dogs are as cute as they believe it is. Make them aware of it, but stay polite.

I understand. It’s kinda hard to be polite sometimes though. Another thing made me concerned was that many adults bring their kids to the dog park and those kids tend to behave wild and are scaring many dogs. I saw some dogs were so afraid of their unpredictable behavior and they were being very nervous. One kid was swinging a big branch around many small dogs. Of course his parents said absolutely nothing. No wonder why their dog doesn’t behave.

I thought dog parks are supposed to be places where both you and your dog can have some fun…

Re: I'm tired of irresponsible dog owners...

K in response to this I have to say I agree...

BUT ...

I get even MORE annoyed when owners come to a park and :

A) expect their dog ONLY to play with them, and then proceed to get annoyed with other dogs (and their owners) when they run up to theirs to play and/or chase after a ball/frisbee if thrown

(I am not about to tell my dog NOT to play at a dog park)

B) expect dogs to play nicely ALL the time without any playful growls or rough-play... you know what - they're dogs. Playing rough does not always signal aggression. Playing loudly - growling/barking, etc ... also does not always signal aggression. Sometimes there are loud players. Sometimes there are rough players.

Nervous owners suck... they really, really do. If you're going to be nervous, not want your dog to play like a dog, or with other dogs, don't bring him/her to the damn park ...I think they suck almost as much as the guy who left his dog in the park and went across the street (well okay, maybe not that much... but still).

With lots of frustrated love,
Spud & Zasha' Mum

Very true. We saw a guy who brought his little dog (it could have been westie but i was not sure) with looooooong leash last week. Two weeks ago, we saw a guy who carried his Shiba-inu moments after he came into the park. I don't get it.

Sometimes its just best not to stress over things like this. It's just going to get you in these moods.

Big problem in todays America is that people worry to much what other people do. Be glad that you know better, and keep good care of your dog.

Re: I'm tired of irresponsible dog owners...

I gave up on dog parks for almost a year because i had experienced it ALL.

I have trouble not saying things to people and as a result i've gotten into several heated arguments. I even called the police on a guy when his dog attacked mine and he didn't even stand up to help stop it. He simply said his dog was decended from royalty and was only "playing" with my dog. (my dog was pinned into the fence screaming while this dog tried to shake the life out of him.

Im very no nonsense, my big pet peeve is mounting. "OhhOHH Muffy is just playing" no hes not, thats not playing, make him stop it, i don't let my dogs do it.

BUT i have found a new park that (knock on wood) is in a nicer area of town and has very very very few problems. 99% of the dogs are altered and the intact ones seem to be controlled. Im so happy.
