Venting...I hate the neighbor dogs...

I hate the neighbors too...
Shunka, being spayed and kenneled all the time as to go on walks on occasion to..be outside. My boss called and I decided I'd walk her while I talked to him. We got down the road and I saw a lab. (Not the same one that Fang has been having problems with.) And then the other one.(Again not the one Fang has been having problems with) The first one, an intact male, unsupervised by anyone outside of a 2 & 8 year old and without a solid recall made bee line straight to us. I contiued to walk. I said to my boss, "Oh fantstic, a lab is comming." I wasn't concerned, these dogs had always had a solid recall before. All of a sudden that lab was ontop of Shunka attempt to get her spine, and she was trying to do a belly up. The neighbors across the street were yelling, the 8 year old was yelling, I was trying to pull Shunka back to me to her heel while trying to kick the lab. (At this point I had forgotten I was talking to my boss. He had hung up and so had I.) The labs went off to pee, and I checked Shunka's back, and stitches. When we began walking again, the labs started it all over again... I kept Shunka next to me, giving me more time to kick any lab that I may need to, but I continued to walk away. While the neighbors yelled from their deck, the 8 year old yelled and dropped his bike, and the 2 year old stood stunned. Shunka has some bruises on her back and is missing some fur, I've got some bruises on my legs from being bit, and I am rather pissed off. (Not to mention shooken, even though I was mad enough during the whole ordeal to try to beat the crap out of the labs, while leave with Shunka.) So I called my boss back and he attempted to get me to talk, but I was shook up and out of breath, and mad.
The second I'm calm enough theres going to be some people with a nice chewing out, if the neighbors that were yelling haven't beaten them to it...

Doesn't your town have a leash law? I'd be complaining to someone if I'd been bitten.

As would I, I don't like getting bitten so I'd be doing some knocking on a neighbors door and informing them that either they keep their dogs leashed or out of where it's public access, or that you will call AC...
What a bunch of crap.

It does, and everybody in town got a letter about it around a year ago because of these 2 specific dogs, because they are the only unfriendly ones ever off a leash.

That's what I hate about situations like that...it's a good thing your dog is well behaved. I can't say that mine would have been as good having another large dog jump on him...and unfortunately if the fight couldn't be broken up it would be another "pitbull" story in my case.

Irritating to say the least...just goes to show you that all dogs have the ability to be a pain in the butt and bite someone.

What a bunch of crap.
Actually what I was tempted to do was let Shunka loose and tie the labs to the tree, in the tree, by their necks...
I might go over there later, armed with what ever I can to show them they can't let their dogs be loose...

It doesn't look like it, but our dogs do have some pit bull in them. Of course I wouldn't say anything, because then it 'would have been my dogs starting the fight.'

Re: Venting...I hate the neighbor dogs...

Lol, of course. Obviously you have witnesses to the incident as well, I'd definetely go show the neighbors what happened to you with being bitten (did it break the skin? I hope not) and inform them that they are liable for their animals actions...so hence if you had been bitten badly and needed stitches etc, they would be held liable and their dogs could be taken away if AC was called for a dog bite...

With any luck it will "smarten" them up...but I doubt it. Sometimes the idea of being in a world of sh!t without a paddle is enough to straighten some people out.

No, I just have a few nice sized bruises. Would it count though, if it weren't the first time, but the third or fourth, to the seventh or eighth person?
I'm not the first person to be attacked by these dogs, and everybody in town knows that they are mean dogs...
I wish a cop would have seen the whole ordeal.

Well, I think, as much as I don't like doing something like that, that I would call Animal Control and make a dog bite report. Especially since you said there were witnesses and these dogs are known to be a menace? What if it's a child next time? No that kind of trash needs to stop... no dog should be left out to run amok and bite anyone...if nothing else report them for violation of leash laws...
Obviously the owners are oblivious to the fact that their dogs are a problem...I think someone with some authority should inform them of this.

When the male was younger, him and his owner were out when I was walking one of my dogs and he had the lab go after his nephew...while he stood back and laughed. I think his nephew was 10-11 at the time too.

I'm sure I'll see the sheriff in town later. (As a town of 100 we just have drive-by's by the sheriff of the near-by town to make sure...there are no gangs I guess. ) I always see him on Shunka's walks. I'll be sure to tell him, if he doesn't do anything I'll get a hold of AC and let them know.

Good idea...sounds like your neighbor is a flaming moron! Those dogs don't deserve it and neither does anyone that comes into contact with them.

Re: Venting...I hate the neighbor dogs...

He is, and he knows it. I've told him before.
He used to have a dark but purebred golden. He was out running the dogs one day, and he ran it over. (His idea of running the dogs is taking them out into the country, taking them out of the truck, and driving away.) It was his only dog anybody in town acutally liked. A very sweet animal was lost in that deal.

Re: Venting...I hate the neighbor dogs...

I was in a situation like yours about a year ago. There was an (intact) young male pit bull that my neighbors let "explore" the neighborhood whenever he wanted. Unfortunately, he was dog aggressive, and being the big terrier that he is, chased me and nipped my calves even when I was jogging sans dog. One unfortunate day he ran up to me and lunged at my dog. I picked up my (also dog aggressive) lhasa mix and held his mouth shut while making like a tree, hoping the pit would go away. As he wouldn't leave us alone, he was pepper sprayed in the face. The owners were furious with me, but I feel my actions were justified as that was the billionth time something like that had happened, and their dog was the entire reason I bought the pepper spray in the first place. Calling animal control wasn't really an option for either party, as pit bulls are not allowed in my area. They weren't going to get themselves in trouble for having one, and I wasn't going to get the dog euthanized just because his owners were irresponsible dimwits.

Re: Venting...I hate the neighbor dogs...

I've heard that works, but I've never actually tried it. I've heared that when you use it, the dog attacking you will never attack you again because it knows the pain you cause, even from a distance. I never actually decided to try it, since I wasn't sure if it would work... See Shunka isn't dog aggressive at all. She used to be afriad of other dogs, but with dog training last year other dogs didn't bother her... I'm not sure how it's going to work this year, I hope that lab didn't bother her too much.

LOL I've done it before, not to this particular family, but they did finally build a kennel from their dog. I don't think people like visits from me. xD

Re: Venting...I hate the neighbor dogs...

Wow, reading this made me angry. I can't believe that the kids didn't even go inside to get their parents to come and get the dog. I have been lucky to not have to endure this. Though one time I was walking Snoopy and this guy was sitting in front of his apartment talking on the phone with his off leash lab and it ran over and I stood between Snoopy and the lab and yelled "get off your butt and get your dog!" then he apologized and I said "they have leash laws for a reason, to keep people with untrained dogs under control of their dogs."

You should have called the police before you called your boss back--I simiwould have definitely reported it---

I had a similar incident not too long ago and it is very upsetting and there were actually some people who said that the other dogs wanted to play--perhaps these labs wanted to play....

O_o
Durb, Very good idea. If the dogs are out with the owner later I'll be sure to say that...probably more cussing would be involved though. lol
I'm sure he won't apologize, and probably laugh, but if he did apologize it wouldn't matter because I wouldn't take it.

I don't think so, they were bristled and growling...

I was thinking about it, but I thought I should let him know I was okay, and I knew I would need to tell my dad as well. Not to mention my boss said he was just about to call me back.

Re: Venting...I hate the neighbor dogs...

I carry things with me to prevent this - not only for mine and my dogs safety, but for the other dog as well...
I have a "stop stick" - police style expandable baton. First because if a dog starts a fight with Smokey (who is always leashed when out for walks but there's lots of loose dogs around here) I have no way to get him loose...he's freaking strong...and it wouldn't be the first time someone choked him almost unconscious to get him off another dog (who also, incidently, started the first with Smokey on a leash) also works good to pry them apart like a crowbar, or to get the other dog off...since now for the most part, I can call Smokey off if I can get the other one to stop. It's also 18 inches long...meaning I don't have to get in the middle and get bitten - always a plus.

In AZ I carried a gun with me - not just for other dogs but the wildlife (mountain lions, bears, etc since I was in the mountains) - works good in rural area's to scare things off...one 9mm round in the air usually stops things. That and I would walk fairly late in the evening and you never know what kind of creepy people are around. I haven't gotten my NY carry license yet so it has to stay in secured lock up.

Unfortunately, sometimes you need to carry something to keep the nasties at bay. Pepper spray (kingring sized) seems like it would be a good alternative for a suburban area
