Nubs is already doing his job!

When I saw Nubs for the first time I knew this Pit Bull was a perfect example to be an ambassador for his breed. It was one of the main reasons for me adopting him. He has the full out Pit bull personality and its growing every day. I have never been so happy to have a dog try to push his boundaries with me in my life. All my confidence training has really effected him in a great way. Its been about 2 weeks since he has actually been scared of something when out of walks, even then he now as the confidence to actually walk up to what he is scared of and check it out. I'm so proud of him

I took him for my normal walk today, down the street and on our path down to the baseball park to walk in and out of the crowds and be around other dogs and so forth. Armed with my hot dogs for treats I made it about 4 houses down when this women walked out of her house and asked to pet Nubs. She has petted him a few times before but this was the first chance we got to talk.

She told be she is actually scared of Pit bulls and other large dogs. She was attacked by a neighbors Pit and lab when she was younger. There are a lot of dogs in the neighborhood that when they walk by she hides, but Nubs just makes her have to come out and say "Hi!". She also thanked me for allowing the kids in the neighborhood to pet him and learn the correct way to be around strange dogs. That alone made my day!

2 houses down from there the neighborhood kids were hanging out and of course had to say Hi (Nubs LOVES kids). I hear their mom start yelling "NO GET AWAY FROM THAT DOG" but then came out of the house to actually talk to me. In 5 minuets Nubs had won her over and she was receiving a lot of kissing on her face. She just had never met a Pit bull that was actually sweet. Another hater down!

Then on our way back I got stopped by 2 bikers that I see every other day that finally had to stop and meet Nubs. They couldn't believe how sweet he was either (of course Nubs had to show off and curl up in one of their laps on his back). I don't know if it was the bandanna that made him approachable today or what but he was just a magnet today!

I just had to share with everyone how happy I am with my "Nut ball" (his newest nickname) and with all the bad things about pits going on the forums the last few days, we could use a good story

Ok this was nice to read. I admit I have always been a little fearful of pits. Just because of their reputation etc. This forum has changed my way of thinking about them. Nice to read stories like this one. Nubs seems like a great dog.

YAY for Nubs! The bandanna more then likely helped the people think he was more approachable. I know a lot of people who think an animal is nicer just because it is wearing clothes. But now they know he is a sweet dog whether he is wearing clothes or not.

Congratulations! Sounds like a great day! I would love to see a picture of Nubs in his "friendly bandanna."

ETA: Spoke too soon. I just saw there's a picture post of just this thing!

WTG Nubs...Yup, the bandana was a hit! Might have also helped that he was smelling SWEET!

Seriously, this made my day. I was at the park today and they had dog adoption day there...3 pit mixes! I really really really wanted to take one home with me.

Please give Nubs a BIG hug and smooch from me. I will have to live vicariously through you for a while.

No worries, He got all the hugs and kisses he could want (If he doesn't get his daily cuddle with his Mommy he acts all depressed)

Actually I took him for his walk first. I wouldn't dare give a bath with out wearing the feisty pup out. As it was at first he was more interested in drinking the water then me pouring it on top of him.

I'll have to always walk him with his bandanna on. I love people coming up to us and asking what breed he is then being shocked when they find out he is a Pit. Most people think he is a Boxer *shrugs* I even had a couple from Canada (a week or so ago)ask me what mix he was and when I told them he was "purebred" they didn't understand. They were from an area where they are banned. I had to explain to them BSL and such and why BSL was BS. It was fun to see their kids interact with Nubs.

Re: Nubs is already doing his job!

people ask me sooooo many questions about bolo when we go out.

"does she got that lockjaw goin on?"

"aren't you afraid to have a pit in the house with a toddler?"

these are some examples..

an 11 year old boy asked me that first question. he professed to me proudly that he went to two dogfights with his brother. we ended up in the tennis courts playing with bolo. I told him about all the cool stuff pits are capable of but he was especially interested in weight pull.

marcel is 14 and just got his first dog. he comes to my house every weekend with rocko and we train the dogs. he turned his brother and friends in for fighting dogs and wants to train a weight pulling champion pit bull. rocko is a pit/jrt mix. one down, thousands to go.

this is how we stop cruelty. teach those who don't know and show them an alternate path.

take a bow nubs and company. we need more teachers.

Re: Nubs is already doing his job!

At my rescue event yesterday a lady was getting her dogs out of the car to come and get vaccinations. She owned 1 Pit bull 1 Rottweiler and 2 of the now adult pups from the Pit and Rott combinations. Another lady in the van next to her couldn't wait even a second an pulled her Terrier mix out of the van. It came out screaming and yipping like crazy. This action unfortunately got the attention of the Rott, Pit and pups. All 4 jumped out of the car and ran after the terrier mix which started screaming at the top of it's lungs. I thought for sure it was dead. I grabbed the Rotts leash and dove down for the Pit female. she had a skinny little cat leash and was hard to grab. All the screaming that was going on and excitement with other dogs barking and fussing about it. All 4 dogs were just there to take a look and were all easily caught. Anyway, moral of the story. These dogs that are known for being dog aggressive and thought of as vicious did NO damage. Never even touched the Terrier mix even with all the commotion. In all my years of rescue I have to say that 98% of the Pit bulls that I meet (and there are many) have been wonderful happy go lucky dogs. Yes, some of them are dog aggressive. In rescue I have certainly NOT been exposed to the nicest of situations for dogs yet so many of them are wonderful. That is the side of the Pit bulls that more people need to see. The happy go lucky clown dogs that so many of them are. It is so nice to hear of other peoples success stories in educating the public.
Zimandtakamdgrramdmimi That is a wonderful thing you are going as well. Changing one will help to change others. The more info we can get out there ANTI dog fighting. the better off this wonderful breed will be.
