| Searching for a breed... My girlfriend and I both want a certain type of dog that we saw while watching a dog show on TV, however we missed the name of the breed and it's driving us both nuts!
How my girlfriend described it was "...a cocker spaniel puppy that never grows up. It stays little." She wasn't sure if it was one of the newer poodle mixes or just a breed she'd never seen.
Can someone solve our problem? |

| Re: Searching for a breed... Either way, do consider them when researching your next breed. I've heard nothing but good things about them from owners here.
The papillon is another toy spaniel, even smaller than the CKCS. IMO, they're one of the best toy breeds out there. Most don't look much like cockers, but the phalene variety does have the droopy ears (picture at bottom of page linked). http://www.dogbreedinfo.com/papillon.htm

| Re: Searching for a breed... Alright, it turns out that I am a typical boyfriend, and went in search of the wrong thing. She did not say 'cocker spaniel' puppy, she said 'golden retriever' puppy. So, amend the first post to read:
How my girlfriend described it was "...a golden retriever puppy that never grows up. It stays little." She wasn't sure if it was one of the newer poodle mixes or just a breed she'd never seen.
Sorry for the mix-up, but can anyone help with this problem? |

| Re: Searching for a breed... It wasn't necessarily a breed at all. It could have been a mix, or a runt or (heaven help us) an intentionally bred miniature golden. |

| Re: Searching for a breed... I've heard a Toller described that way, which is, IMO, plainly stupid- they're REALLY different, although they're golden red and retrievers.
What about a ruby CKCS? They're solid red but I've met some who are a lighter shade like a reddish Golden. And even as adults they're very puppylike and playful. |

| Re: Searching for a breed... I'm not sure Golden Retriever's ever grow up, but they sure don't stay little. They seem to remain puppy-like and playful as long as they have breath in their bodies. I have never heard of a 'toy' Golden (and hope I never will) but GRs are so popular that there is an abundance of part GR mutts, some of which are smaller than purebreds, but still look something like goldens. Try searching petfinder.com for Breed:'Golden Retriever' and Size:'Small'. Some will just be regular GR puppies, but some will be crosses with smaller dogs. |

Kicking myself for not writing it down. |

| Re: Searching for a breed... What about a Clumber Spaniel? But actually, they look like an overgrown Cocker. They are still cute. http://www.akc.org/breeds/clumber_spaniel/ |

| Re: Searching for a breed... Referring to your original post I definitely would have said CKCS, too. But since you're now talking about something different, I am totally lost. I can't really think of anything that would be "puppy size" and look like a Golden Retriever when full grown...
Do you have any more info? Did it have short or long hair? What kind of ears? Tail? Etc. I'm rattling my brain and can't think of what looks like a mini GR... lol. |

| Re: Searching for a breed... I got curious and found some intriguing small golden mixes: Shorty is awaiting rescue in West Virgina. On his petfinder listing he is described as a mix of Golden and Corgi:
Nickles and his siblings are described as Golden/Lakeland Terrier mixes from San Antonio TX. They look a bit like yellow labs, at the moment, but they are still young. His sister is named Nutmeg and his brother is Newt. They are not pictured as I am limited to 4 images per post. They are cute as gold buttons, though. Click their names to see!
Un-named small golden mixes in Houston, TX: Hailey is waiting for rescue in Sun Valley,CA, and is also said to be a Golden/Corgi mix:
There are many others, but, as mentioned before I can only post so many pictures. If you find a breeder selling designer crosses to produce smaller, Golden Retriever-looking dogs, you will basically be paying extra for intentional mutts. (I am not dead set against all intentional hybrids, I just don't see much point in cases like this, when there are already so many cool rescues like these around.)

| Re: Searching for a breed... I too wonder about the Clumber Spaniel or even the Sussex. There was a Golden Retriever Springer mix at the humane society today. Looked like a Golden but was short and had one white foot with speckles. |

I can't really think of any (AKC) pure bred dogs that would look like a "puppy sized" golden retriever |

Not exactly a small dog when full grown, maybe you were thinking of a goldendoodle? They can be big but they can be quite small. http://www.dogbreedinfo.com/goldendoodle.htm |
