| update on buddy so it's 2 am and i just got back from the emergency vet. there's something wrong with a disc or something in his neck. he's on extremely strict rest for the next 5-6 weeks. so no walks, no day care, no dog park, no playing. i have to carry him down the 3 steps we have to go out to go potty and he has to be on a leash and that's the extent of him being outside. no jumping on or off furniture. he can be up on the furniture, as long as i'm picking him up and putting him down. (i think he'll be sleeping on the floor from here on out which really sucks sense hubby's gone and buddy a great cuddler) as far as grooming goes, well he'll get very little of that for the next 5-6 weeks. he's also on 3 prescriptions
after the inital 5-6 weeks of rest, there's very limited play for the rest of his life. this is something that will heal and he won't be in pain anymore, but there's always the chance it'll happen again from here on out. it sucks so bad. he's only 7. he's got at least another 7 years or so on him.
i held it together for the most part at the vet. even when he was telling me he can't play much pretty much for the rest of his life. at least i held it together until they took him back for x-rays and he squealed out in pain. then i lost it. i have to go out and get him a harness tomorrow. he'll probably never again wear a collar.
my poor little man. |

| Re: update on buddy Awww, Poor baby! Instead of having to pick him up, get him a set of steps to get on and off the couch with, it'll minimize the strain on his joints far better than you lifting him. |

| Re: update on buddy I'm so sorry. Carla gave you good advice with the set of steps.
My dogs (2 Standard Poodles and 1 Shih Tzu) aren't allowed to jump up and off my bed (too high), but use the steps I got. The SPoodles have never had a problem getting on or off, but, an injury is always possible, so I make them use the steps.
Sending lots of pawsitive thoughts (and Poodle hugs 'n kisses)!

| Re: update on buddy Aww sorry to hear about cute little buddy. You mentioned perscriptions. Ask your vet about also giving a full spectrum antibiotic. The enzymes released when the body is in flamed can cause a infection in the discs or spinal cord. We ran into this with Femka. ( turned out to be spinal meningitus). Also Lauries titus started to improve after starting the antiobics. The broad spectrum antibiotic givens is cepholoxine. It wont hurt him if he doesnt need it, but make all the difference in the world if he has it. |

| Re: update on buddy I am so sorry, with crate rest he will be better in time (6 weeks minimum). Be sure to follow the docs orders, don't give in if he starts feeling better. It sounds similar IVDD which Dachshunds or long backed dogs are prone to (I don't recall what breed your dog is). Check this site out, it may answer some of your questons. www.dodgerslist.com
We have ramps for the bed and couch, it makes it easier on their backs and neck to get on/off the furniture.
Sending positive healing vibes, hang in there he will be better soon. |

What happened to him? | well he had gotten hurt a couple days ago in the yard when gwen ran into him. but before i took him to the vet he was limping on a completely different leg than after she hit him.
i finally took him to the vet after mentioning on here that he tried to bark at the tv and as he barked, he squealed out in pain.
vet said it wasn't gwen that caused this. it's something he just had, but she probably helped it to become inflammed.
currently he's in his crate in the living room. just staring at me with those sad sad eyes. i think this is the first time in the four years we've had him that he's been in his crae and hasn't been crying/barking to get out. |

| Re: update on buddy I hope he heals swiftly and well. Once he is done with his 6 weeks of extreme rest, you may want to look into a dog chiropacter. They may be able to help keep it from happening again, and allow him more freedom in the future. |

| Re: update on buddy Awww, I'm so sorry to hear this. At least now you know what's wrong with him. Don't give up hope for him--you'd be surprised how well dogs adjust, once the immediate pain is over I bet he'll adjust to a new lifestyle very quickly and will be just as happy as ever. Who likes collars anyway? Harnesses are much cooler!
Give him some kisses and some extra loving for me. And e-hugs to you too. Hang in there, it's all going to be alright! |
