A trip to the emergency vet, AKA beware of sticks

It's been a bit since I posted here (sorry). I thought I'd share because maybe someone can learn from my pup and I

The puppy loves chasing sticks into the water. He also loves playing with other dogs. Those are his 2 favorite things. So, yesterday when they got combined he was over joyed. He was running with Dusty dog, swimming and having a blast. Dusty Dog's person (heh, I never remember the people's names) was throwing sticks. He picked up a large stick to throw and Schmoo couldn't contain himself. He went charging over just as the guys arm swung back for the throw. WHACK! The stick went across Schmoo's face. After much yelping we got Schmoo calmed down. The guy felt horrible and I kept telling him it wasn't his fault. At first he wouldn't open his eye, but then he seemed fine. He played with Dusty dog for another 20 minutes, running around like a maniac. I got home and checked the eye and it looked normal....

but that night it continued to swell and turn redder and redder. Schmoo woke up about 10:30 and he couldn't open the eye at all and he seemed uncomfortable and confused. Off the emergency vet we went. He's ok, no serous damage to the eye. No concussion. Whew! He's on meds and has already been back to fetching sticks in the water.

And the moral is, sometimes it's better to wait for a good thing? Watch out for sticks? I knew he had a habit of running up on me when I was throwing sticks, now I wish I'd tried to teach him to wait

The eye already looks much better then it did. I didn't take pictures when it was really awful, I was too worried.

Aww he's a handsome fellow. You can still see a little swelling. I'm glad Schmoo is doing okay and almost back to his normal self.

He's such a sweet looking dog. Glad his eye is better. My Boston Terrier who went to Rainbow Bridge always had eye problems. I cringe when I hear of eye injuries. So glad Schmoo is ok.

Awwww, Poor Scmoo. You know, sometimes things just... happen. And it's really nobody's fault, and no matter how many things you prepare for, the one that happens will be the one you didn't think of.

I'm glad he'll be ok.

I certainly didn't see that coming. And the guy who hit him felt terrible, but it really wasn't his fault

He's been very spoiled today. He's been coming and pressing his face up against me and getting lots of cuddles, scritches and pats

He's definitely feeling better. In fact he was outside playing and being quite rowdy and finally had to settle him down a bit, because I could see the eye starting to swell up a bit more. Silly mutt.
