Anyone have canaan contacts?

Rescue or breeders is fine. It will be quite a few years (3+) before I decide to get one, but a Canaan is 100% on the must own list. If anyone has any links or contacts to shelters, rescues or reputable breeders (U.S. or otherwise) I would be extremely grateful.

Re: Anyone have canaan contacts?

You need to check out the Canaan dog club of Americas website. They have a breeder referral section.

Here it is: http://cdca.org/referral.html

Go through this website, lots of info on the breed there. Canaan Dog has a small group of dedicated breeders, so that will make searching a little easier. Opposed to looking for a GSD, which has hundreds of BYB's in every state. Only catch is you will likely have to do some travelling to get a well bred pet.

I came close to getting a Canaan Dog when I got my 3rd Collie. I contacted Donna and she referred me to someone in my area. She is very nice but it may take her a few days to get back to you.

Re: Anyone have canaan contacts?

I was approved and waiting for a Canaan like...last week. Due to some contract issues (I didn't like the health guarantee), I decided not to go forward with it. Some of the breeders will tell you that because Canaan Dogs are so free of health defect, they don't feel the need to have a health contract past the initial vet visit, but this is silly...if they are so confident, they wouldn't mind extending it to 1-3 years like many other reputable breeders because they know (1) the risk of someone needing to take advantage of it is small and (2) defects can crop up in any seemingly healthy line.

I'm still mourning the loss of my was-soon-to-be coulda-been Canaan puppy...but it was the right thing to do. Hopefully you have better luck finding a breeder you like. Keep in mind that as always, health is your #1, followed by temperament, since Canaans tends toward the shy/wary side of things. Excellent early socialization is even more important than it is for most breeds.

Canaan Dog Club of America is a good place to start. In addition to the breeder referral list, they also have a link to the Canaan Dog breed rescue, but there are rarely dogs in it. Just be discriminatory, and try to not be blinded by dreams of your own Canaan puppy. I'm glad I didn't, though I'm still rather disappointed that it didn't work out...I've been putting off writing back to make my "no" official for two days as a result. However, it's the right thing to do, so I will be contacting them today.

You can also contact Bryna Comsky, who has translated Dr. Menzel's original book on the Canaan breed. If you have the chance, try to meet a few Canaans too...they have an interesting breed history and look, but they also have a rather unique outlook on life, and are not the easiest dog to own, especially if you are not prepared. If you want to contact Ms. Comsky for a copy of her book ($25 w/ shipping I believe), pm me for her email address.

I'll stop here in the interest of not leaving you with a wall of text...I could talk about Canaans all day. Good luck with your search, and I'm glad you are starting well in advance.

Pam O, of Caoilta, is in the UK, but has an extremely interesting website- she has Canaans in addition to her spitz.

I've only got one, but they are not a breeder. They show/work their Canaan. Maybe I can ask them about breeders that you could get in contact with? Although I'm sure the scda has some good breeders to look at or who could refer you. There really are not too many breeders out there total.
