| I'm gonna freaking kill my DH! So, we've been working with Lucy on her dog aggression, and home protection tendencies. She's doing very well, too.
But, I swear, I'm gonna just murder my DH, and kids, all of them!!
I have shown them how I work with Lucy. I often have one or two of them assist me with doorbell/knock reaction. I've told them all the commands she knows, and explained how to use them.
So, what do they do?? When someone came to the door today (and, I was unable to go out to the front room at that moment-but could hear it all), and Lucy was feeling particularly defensive for some reason, they completely disregarded any training she's had. They kept yelling at her, saying, "Lucy! Stop it! Lucy! Get back! Lucy! Knock it off!!" The only word she knows in all of that is "Lucy." Then, she lunged toward the door when my DH went to open it, before he even had her contained in any way!
How about, "Lucy, No! Lucy, Come!" And, then, have one of the kids hold her, or put her in the den right next to the front door? Why do I work with her, and teach her commands when under duress, if they're going to freaking ignore everyting they've been taught about her, and not do ANYthing she understands??
I keep telling them that her behavior and control is our responsibility, and I've been working soooooo hard with her, and explaining it to them, too.
I feel so defeated and frustrated by it all.

| Re: I'm gonna freaking kill my DH! Blast! That's some seriously annoying stuff there. I at least have only one person to fight against, and he's just here on weekends, and alcohol is involved so it's like starting over every time. Heh. Try screaming nonsense commands to them sometime and see how they react. Nothing is more aggrevating than people undoing what step you just did, before it's conditioned behavior. |

He did get the point, at least. He was so annoyed at Lucy for not behaving, until I made it all very loud and clear what was likely going on in her head.
Geez.
Thank you for sympathizing! |

| Re: I'm gonna freaking kill my DH! ... and the thing is it's so SIMPLE!!! The dogs knows a command, use that command. Then when the moment arrives everyone is in a panic and screaming meaningless sounds to the dogs. I can only imagine being slightly worried about someone coming into my space, then having my owners screaming things at me I don't get. Probably sounds like barking, like they are barking at the dog to do something about the visitor! When all they have to do is say "Sioux, assis".
I didn't realize how much those situations annoy me until your thread made me think about it. Then I couldn't stop tinking about it. That always happens around here. |

I feel so defeated and frustrated by it all. | I feel ya!! My hubby almost all the time disregarded most training methods with his last dog; some days he would do okay, but for the most part, he never treated the dog for correct behaviors, almost always let the dog lead him around (not good for a fear aggressive, borderlining on dominance aggression type of dog!), plus he would often not correct when the dog actually DID need it...talk about a confused canine atleast 50 % of the time!
He is doing better with his new dog, but I do ponder what will happen once the dog is more consistent in desired behaviors; I am hoping he won't let her slide (which means he is sliding) back into old habits. |

| Re: I'm gonna freaking kill my DH! I am right there with ya, hon. I am training two puppies in a household of four people, three of whom don't give a rat's behind about what I'm trying to accomplish. I teach 'sit' with the hand sign and the dogs do great. Then DH comes in and says 'siddown' and points at their butts with his finger, then can't understand why they don't listen. So he plants their butts on the ground and says it again. I tell him not to do something completely different than what I'm doing, and he just shrugs me off like it's no big deal and like I'm being too anal about how I'm teaching them.
But then he complains that the dogs are not obeying.
Sigh.
Some people just don't get it.

Some people just don't get it. | If he wants to teach them how to sit using a voice command, then just show him how to do it properly... Dogs can learn different cues in different ways; my Sophie learned voice commands first, and is now working on alot of those with a hand cue. |

I've shown him how to do it, and I've even told him to just say 'sit' because they comply now even without the hand sign. Nope. He won't do it. Gotta be his way.
I'm thinking there might be something deeper going on there. LOL |

What do they all tell them to do to lie? "Laydown!" Ugh. Everytime. Talk about a confused dog.
The kids are even weirder. They STILL call Holly "Puppy" and get annoyed that she ignores them. I keep telling them, "Her name is HOLLY!" But, they don't listen.
Sometimes, I think the only creatures in the house who listen to me are the dogs. Good dogs. I love my dogs. |

LOL I'd start calling them "Kid" or "Person".
I love the example above of yelling nonsense at the people who are doing it to the dog. |

I love my dogs. | This reminds me of how I taught Tiffera "down" (as in lay down) and right after that my siblings tried teaching her "lay". And then got mad and started pushing her down to get her to "lay" for them. I was soooooooo mad. I yelled at them about it and put a sign on my door saying "IT'S DOWN, NOT LAY". I think they get it now. |

| Re: I'm gonna freaking kill my DH! I know how you feel!! My SO is pretty good with the dog but still lets him out the front door lots and gets him hyped up over everything. When you have an exciteable dog you don't need to send them into spastics!
Hopefully they'll start to get it soon ! |

| Re: I'm gonna freaking kill my DH! I feel for you! Arrrgh, it's so annoying when people mess with your dogs. My daughter and (then 5 yr. old) grandson moved in with me while she saved to buy her own house. Maddy was 5 months old, and still excitable when people came over. My grandson quickly learned to cross his arms and turn his back if Maddy started to jump up at him, which resulted in her sitting nicely, so she could get what she wanted - attention. Maddy stopped jumping up at him. His mother never has figured it out! LOL And now, nearly 7 yrs. later, she's still flailing her arms and yelling "get back, Maddy!" . . .and Maddy, who doesn't jump on anyone, gets all excited, ready to play the game! Sigh. |

| Re: I'm gonna freaking kill my DH! No BF here, just a family member. With 6, now 7 dogs, I work hard to keep things stable, especially because 6 are female, we [i] work hard at it. Juan will come up and get our JRT riled up to the point that the other dogs go after her and then it turns into a fight.
"get em Cookie, go get 'em go, go, go get'em"
Doesn't matter HOW many times I say don't DO that! There's always a next time. He just doesn't see the big deal. |
