| Microchipping I am considering having Ryder and Kaiden microchipped and have some questions:
Is your dog(s) microchipped? Why or why not?
How did you dogs handle the actual inserting?
Approx what did you pay?
Which brand did you go with and why?
We dont travel often, but do go to Atlanta once a year to visit my mother. My dogs have an amazing recall, and are not ones to wonder off. They both wear collars with their rabies tag, and an ID tag. I've gone back and worth on microchipping them. |

| I plan on getting my puppies microchipped, both of them. The cost is $20 per puppy. I'm not sure the exact process, but I do think that it is an ingenious idea.

All three of my dogs are microchiped, the reson being is why not. It provides an extra bit of hope that your dog will get back to you. You can use it to prove you are the owner of your dog. It can be traced back all the way to the maker and what hospital it was sold too, and they should know who the original owner of the pet was when the microchip was put in. In my area all pounds/shelters are required to scan for a microchip, and Vets are suposed to as well if the owner lets them know that they found the pet as a stray. Vet's also scan pets before puting in a microchip, so if someone tries to steal the dog and then get it microchiped they can trace who the real owner is. How did you dogs handle the actual inserting?
Mine were fine with it, a slight yelp out of them and they were fine. It is a thicker needle than a vaccine, but it's compareable to someone getting their ears peirced. It only hurts for a few seconds if it hurts at all. At the vet clinic that I work at we always have it as a suygery exrta that you can add on when you pet is going under for something else, that way they don't feel it at all. It's mainly for people who are having their puppy spayed or neutered, but sometimes owners will add it on for their older dogs. Approx what did you pay?
I don't remeber what I paid since it was so long ago. But we charge 47.50 plus you have to send in a 14$ registration fee. Which brand did you go with and why?
It isn't usually where you can pick whatever brand you want and have the vet do it for you, It;s whatever brand the vet buys that your pet gets microchiped with. Two of my dogs have the AVID chip and the other one has an AKC CAR chip, at my work we use the home again microchips. I've haven't heard of any problems with any brands of microchips, so I don't think it really matters waht brand you have it done with
Just remember that the chip does not replace responsible ownership. You should never let your pet run lose in the streets and expect your pet to come home because it's microchiped. |

| Elsa's chipped, but she came to me that way. I still would probably do it, because even I have forgotten Elsa outside by accident...that day she slipped out behind me when I went to look for a water leak. So accidents can happen, and for that reason I'm glad she's chipped by home again. I've seen a chip work when one day I returned a stray to my local animal care...it turned out to be my neighbor's dog. And no, I did not steal the dog from my neighbor's backyard...for those of you who were thinking that. I didn't even know they had a dog. Too bad for them, the microchip worked, and they had to pay to bail him out. Good! |

| I don't yet have my dog chipped, and I'm not sure if I will.
One thing you should know, though, is that not all shelters have scanners. My sister works for an animal control in southern California, and she said the equipment is kind of expensive. Since shelters are often on the bottom of the list to receive funding (and the first to take funding cuts), many cannot afford to buy the scanners. Hence, some animals are put down that may have found their owners if they had been scanned.
Not to change your mind one way or another; just wanted to let you know that it is not a guarantee for the return of your dog. |

| My understanding is that Home Again and Avid will donate a scanner to any non-profit organization (shelters, HS etc). If you sister is interested in getting one for the shelter, to contact Avid or Home Again.
I have called around, it looks like it is going to be $35 for the chip and $17.50 to register it.
Im still considering it of course, but will continue to research. I appreciate all of your input! |

| Natalie is microchipped. I decided to go ahead and get it done after the girl at the vet mentioned it. I didn't see them do it because they took Natalie in the back and did it but that chip ended up migrating (very uncommon from what I've been told) later into her shoulder so they put another one in. I watched them do the second one and Natalie yiped when they inserted it but seemed to be fine afterwards.
The company is AVID and it cost $25 for the vet to insert and $15 to register her with AVID. |

| I have my dog microchipped. The animal shelter was doing it for free one day. He took it extremely well. I think it took 1 second, if that.
I did it just for added protection if he gets lost. |

| Yes, my baby is microchipped. 1) it's not that expensive 2) if she's lost, I want every possible option that will bring her home 3) she's a show potential pup, and most collars break off her ruff Quote: |

| Huh? Odd question, I suppose. My pup did not even flinch, so I just let it go like nothing happened. Around $60 I think... Quote: |
Which brand did you go with and why?
| I didn't "go" with a particular brand. My vet is the one who put it in, and it's the brand that he uses.

| I had Brady done durring the nueter surgery so he didn't feel it. they told me that when they do it while the dog is under they insert it alittle deeper into the muscle. I don't know if that's true, just what they said. I haven't gotten Molly done yet, but if I get her Spayed I will definately have it done then. Just seems like cheep insurance and I have never heard of any down side. |

| Chuy got his at about 7 weeks old, before we picked him up. To me, I do not see any down side to doing it. Knowing how he reacts to his regular shots, he probably did not even notice it. |
