any longhaired dashund owners???

have a new long haired dashund puupy, she is now 5 months old. she has some long hair on her ears and the tip of her tail. my question is how long before she will start to get her long hair on the rest of her body? seems like the hair is still the same length as when we got her at 10 weeks. does it take a year plus to grow in or longer? thanks for any answers.

I have a longhair mini dachshund that is 1&1/2 years old. It can take over a year for the coat to start coming in on their body, and over 2 years for the coat to really develop. The length, thickness, and time it takes for the coat to develop depends on the lines your dog comes from, where did you get your new pup? Nutrition can also affect the quality of her coat. Just out of curiosity what color is your girl? mine is Black & Tan.

thanks for the response, she is bk and tan and bought her form a dashund breeder in tx.. we haven't found a food yet that she likes we trid soft food and hard but she will eat the new food maybe one sitting and thats it. we have tried pedigree, benteful, kibbles and bits, ceasers and a few others but not much luck with any of them. she seems to be very stubborn and just refuses to eat them. and barks at EVERYTHING.
thanks for the answer about her coat, we were getting worried that maybe she wasn't a actual mini longhaired, so we will just have to wait and see now that we have a idea on the time..
one other question if you may know. how old are they when they start to lose there baby teeth?
thanks again for the help, have a great day.

I think it might take about a year. Maybe in the spring when they change coats it will be longer. LH doxies don't really have that long of a coat to start. Is your dog pet or show quality? If pet, it may not get the type of coat a show doxie would have.

I like the LH's better then the SH's - what color is your doxie?

As far as your eating problems, the constant changing to "find what she likes" is making her a picky dog and it will get worse.

Get a top quality food - like Iams, Chicken Soup, Innova (sp?), and not the store brands. And stick to that food. If she doesn't eat it right away, pick it up and put it back down 1/2 hour later. Eventually she will eat it and then start eating it when served.

Unless you have a dog that will eat anything you put in front of them, changing foods and giving table food is not a good thing to get them to eat.

They start to lose their baby teeth at around 6 months I think you may want to call your vet to be exactly sure. Mine liked to bite hard when he started loosing his baby teeth. I had to give him ice cubes to help him with the soreness and give him something other than me to bite.

I have to disagree with Keno's mom on the pet coat/show coat thing. Just because a dog isn't in the show ring doesn't mean it won't grow a coat as nice if not better than a show dog. It just means you don't have to keep it perfect all or most of the time like a show dog would.

I do agree with Keno's mom on the food issue however. Do Not keep switching foods on your pup as you have been, Dachsies are famous for being picky eaters. If you et them get away with what they decided to eat then they will try to get away with anything and everything. You need to pick a food that you like and stick with it. You should be feeding twice a day if not three times a day. Only offer your pup the food for 1/2 to 1 hour at most each time you feed then take the food away even if she hasn't eaten. She won't starve herself and will get the message soon enough that she has to eat what you decided to feed her. And do not give in to her begging and that cute little face by giving her treats, if you do it will take even longer for her to learn that she has to eat her food.

I personaly like to feed Royal Canin, But you should consult with your vet on what diet(s) would be good for your pup. Dachsies are prone to alot of problems that are excentuated with an improper diet.

My parents have a mini long hair and his hair is only long on his feet, tail, ears, and his underbelly. He gets snowballs when we are outside.. It seems to me the more hair he is getting..
