Flat-Coated Retriever Anyone?

Hello,

I'm starting the process of finding the right breed for my family (does not include children). I'm very much interested in the flat-coated retriever. I would love if anyone has or does own this breed of dog to share their story with me! I can read all the literature I'd like (and believe me I am) but nothing compares to first hand accounts.

To let you know I'm looking for an active dog that will be a key member of the family. A dog to take hiking, long walks, jogging, bike riding, and a pup who is outgoing and friendly in nature. I've met a couple flat-coats back when I used to groom and absolutely adored them.

My other choice is a labrador retriever, but I'm particulary interested in seeing if a flat-coat would be a good fit for us.

Thanks in advance!

Hello I have a friend who has an 8 yr old black one and he's great. He's very friendly and still playful for an older dog. They have young children (had the dog first) and he does very well with them. He's calmer now but I remember the first few years he was very active and they had to exercise him often. They also live off the lake which he still loves. He's really a beautiful dog. But with those "feathers" he has he really brings in the great outdoors - meaning mud, etc sticks to him!

Flat coated retrievers are not an overly common breed - which can be both good, and bad.

There aren't back-yard-breeders putting out 200 puppies a month such as the labs etc, so there aren't as many variations in conformation, temperament, size etc.

But that being said the flat coated retrievers gene pool is much smaller - meaning the breeds most common congenital defects are quite common in the dogs - even those bred by VERY reputable breeders.

I have a flat coated retriever. He is 17 this month ( I know!!! 17 I can't believe it!). He is definatly heading downhill now, but has gone strone for the first 16 years of his life.

He was a running companion, we did a little bit of agility and flyball for fun, and he has been the best companion I could have asked for. He has been lovely, and I can't even imagine life without him. I wouldn't reccomend the dog to anyone and everyone, but the people who they suit - they REALLY suit - I have yet to hear of anyone who has gotten one, and not loved it!

Thanks so much for responding!

Yes I'm quite worried about the small gene pool, particulary with cancer being a problem (not so much in old age, but the higher prevelance of cancer in younger ages of flat-coats). I could handle an older dog with cancer, but I suspect I would be very heartbroken to lose a dog at a young age so it's something to consider. I also want to make certain that I can handle the activity level. I definately want an active dog (I really would love a hiking buddy), but want to make certain that my home will be the best possible fit for a particularly active breed.

I just received some literature and a list of breeders from the FCRSA so I'm browsing through that. I'm not planning on obtaining any dog for at least a year, so I'll definately have time to make an educated decision! There are a couple of breeders thankfully in my state so I hope to visit with them and meet their dogs if they will allow me to. Just so I can observe them and talk with someone face to face with hands on experience with the breed.

Hehe, thanks for the links I already had all of those bookmarked (I'm just a wee bit obsessive about researching everything to death before making a decision). The encyclopedia info was helpful though to put it in a categorical context.

We're hoping to purchase a home next year (and subsequently when we will get a dog shortly there after) and my partner and I have pretty much decided on a flat coat. The other alternative may be to adopt a flat-coat mix.

Our next step is to make certain my partner isn't allergic (we don't believe so, but we want to rule that out), and for him to meet some flat coats if at all possible (going to shows may not be, but there's a couple breeders within a day trip of us we are hoping will help out).

Just wish getting a dog wasn't so far off. It's been hard to adjust to be dogless
