taking nasty pills

how can i get arisu to take some pills. she needs to take twice a day for ten days for her antiobiotic (some bacteria in her system). she will spit the pill out no matter where i put it in. i've crushed some into apple sauce, cheese and she wont eat it. i wraped it in bread and cheese and she will just put the whole thing in, a minute later the pill gets spit back out.

i need something really good but also easy on the stomach (she has diarrhea cause of this) that can get her to eat the pill. i tried to pop it into the back of hermouth and let her swallow it but she just somehow spit it out again. she is a small dog so she does not just take huge bites of her food like a big dog, she can pick out even the smallest pieces in her food. any ideas would be really appreciated !

Re: taking nasty pills

Sadly, you might just have to force it down. Put it towards the back of the dog's mouth, hold her muzzle closed, and gently stroke her throat. When she swallows, let her go.

I think crushing it might be a mistake. I know you say you tried to wrap it, too, but I would think the crushing would expose the bitter tasting insides. Leaving it whole or cutting it just in half will probably be more successful.

I think there's also a tool that vets have...it's a plastic pill gun. I mean, it probably isn't called that, but it kinda shoots pills down the dog's throat. I remember having to have one for my last dog. Alvin will eat anything that is put inside a slice of banana, so his medication is never a problem.

Re: taking nasty pills

Have you tried velveeta slices? If you put the pill inside 2 pieces of sliced velveeta and then mash it together small enough that it can go down in one gulp without chewing it may help. What about peanut butter. You don't mention what kind of antibiotic, some antibiotics react with some foods.

Re: taking nasty pills

By forcing her as said holding mouth shut, stroaking the throat till u feel her swollow it then give her hugs.

I often used an end of a raw hot dog, push the pill down far enough in it and offer it that way. Or, roll a RAW ball of hamburger, put it in middle, not a real big one, just enough she does not know it is in it. Try that, hope it works, if capules break one open and roll into the hamburger with lil bit of egg too, see if she will take it that way.?

Re: taking nasty pills

When my dogs need meds, i do it two ways...one is the placing of the pill at the back of the dogs throat and closing their mouth with my hand and rubbing their throat until they swallow, but since my dogs are major chow hounds, i am usually sucessful just taking a one inch thick chunk of hot dog, pushing the pill into the center of it where its hidden, and giving it that way. They pretty much inhale the hot dog chunk and don't even know the pill was in it.

Re: taking nasty pills

Put a big glob of peanut butter on your finger. Stick the pill down in the peanut butter. Open your dogs mouth and use your finger to swab the gob of peanut butter to the roof of the dog's mouth. They will naturally lick and swallow the yummy peanut butter and the pill along with it.

Try that and see if it works. If not, I have lots of other ideas LOL.

Re: taking nasty pills

Sandy is a master at seperating her pills from anything I've tried. Penaut butter, cheese, hot dog, marshmallows (I don't recomend trying these, it got really nasty...slobbery chewed marshmellows and wet pills ). I gave up on the easy ways. Now I kind of prop her chin on my leg, open her mouth putting her head up in the air and just put the pill in as close to her throat as possible and doing what the others suggested. She's ticked for a bit, but she always gets over it.

Re: taking nasty pills

thanks everyone. i tried the peanut butter and hot dog idea but it still didnt work. shed didnt even want any peanut butter (with no pill in it, i was just letting her a little lick first to see that it tastes good). she ate the hot dog and aminute later the pill came back out and was spit on the floor again. i'm thinking of crushing it and using the little squirt thing they gave me for liquid medicines to squirt it in her mouth *sigh* thanks for all the ideas , i tried again to put it down her throat andclose her mouth but somehow she always gets it out , and lastnight she got aggressive and snapped at me.

I bought these things from my vet called "Pill Pockets" they worked wonders for me in the past. I recently saw them at my local feed store too. Good Luck!

Re: taking nasty pills

My dog can crack any pill code known to man and fights like the devil if I try to force it. The best thing I have found is ice cream. I take a little bit of ice cream, put the intact pill in it, smoosh it all together into small marble sized ice cream ball, and then give it to my dog as a treat. He just swallows it down (unlike hot dogs or other treats which he tries to chew and discovers the pill) and has yet to figure out that there is something in there.

I've also gotten really secretive about hiding the pill - I don't let him see me get out the pill bottle or put the pill in the ice cream. It's the only thing that has worked more than twice in a row.

Re: taking nasty pills

If all else fails, can you see if the antibiotic is available in liquid form and you can use a syringe to squirt it into the back of her mouth? I think mosts meds are availalbe in liquid form if requested (at least people meds - don't know about doggie meds).

Re: taking nasty pills

I sometimes I am in charge of giving my bf's frenchies their allergy pills in the am. The male is good b/c he loves food, the female gives everyone trouble - so i place the pill behind her tounge as far back as i can and then point her head up and rub her throat once or twice after I give her a spoon of canned food to wash it down so the pill doesn't stay in the throat. If your dog is really small it may make this harder but this process only takes me a second to do and is less traumatic then pleading with her for an hours to eat something without spitting out the pill. Other option crush the pill and gave through a syringe. Good Luck

I've always put a pill in some of the cat's canned food. My dogs LOVE cat food and will eat it no matter what in one gulp.

Percy swallows the ice cream ball as soon as it is in his mouth so there's no time to melt...of course, that's Percy. I hand feed it to him cause if I just put it in a bowl he'll lick it instead. I just pretend it is a treat that happens to be made out of ice cream and it works for me.

I use hot dogs as well, Sparky swallows it whole so he never knows the nasty smelling/tasting valerian root is in there

Re: taking nasty pills

You can have any medication modified by a pharmacy that does "compounding". They can mix (compatible) drugs so that you only have to give one pill/liquid a day, turn pills into liquid or liquid into pills, and flavor either pills or liquids with something your dogs might actually take willingly. Compounding is a miracle for medicating cats . Look it up; you should be able to find a compounding pharmacy in your area or find a mail-order pharmacy that will do it.
