| Breed registration? Is the AKC -American Kennel Club- the only show in town? We have a vendor in Reno who is selling puppies from what he describes as "lesser registries."
Has anyone ever heard of another registry besides the AKC? |

| There are thousands of breed registries. Many of which were developed to avoid the AKC's high standards. Most of these lesser known registries are fronts for pupply millers and back yard breeders to jack up the price of their pups because they want to fool you that you are getting something of value in a sub standard pedigree. I would be very cautious of pedigrees other than the AKC. Do you know what registry he was referring to? I would research the registry first before making any decisions. Why is the AKC the only show in town? Besides their higher standards, they are the only registry recognized by other countries. However, an AKC pedigree does not guarantee the quality of your pup...it is only a registry. The best way to find a quality AKC pup is to study what the standard is, get some references from the breeder, meet the pup's parents and see how they meet the standard, and see what kind of environment he/she is being raised in. Any way other than that, I would not recommend buying the pup. Hope this helps. |

| I few others I would consider "reputable" are the UKC and the CanKC (That's Canadian Kennel Club. Continental Kennel Club is puppy mill city). |

| Curbside said it best. All I can add to this is the comment "Run, Forrest, RUN." |

| Good point Cheetah. There are two CKC's...one is for the Canadian equivalent to the AKC, and that other one Cheetah mentioned. And the UKC may be the only other exception because they also have inducted voluntary DNA analysis into their standards, however, they are still not recognized by other countries. The UKC is more known for performance of the breed, where the AKC is more known for purity of the breed. However, there are a few breeds the AKC will accept with a UKC pedigree. |
