Question When the Puppy first gets home

Hello All,

I have done this before, but I'm curious to know your opinions as I am about to do this again (twice- cockapoos) . The first night that your pup is home with you, did you crate him/her? If you did, how did that work for you and how long did it take for your pup to stop whining? If you did not, why didn't you and did the other option work for you? Thanks in advance,

well, the first night she cried every hour. Then she gradually went to every 2 hours then every 3-4. She really had a tough little time. After 2 weeks she finally slept through the night. Her crate is in our bedroom & I was on an air mattress the first few days next to her crate. I had her crate divided into a pee pad area and then her bedding area and after 2-3 days she religiously kept them separate & helped make her less dependant on me during the night b/c she was only 8 weeks old and 1 1/2 pounds so needed to potty every hour for quite a long time. Her crate was covered on 3 sides with a loose pillow case over the front with side vents (this is the ONLY thing that still to this day will keep her quiet b/c if she sees us she wants us). She had a warm fleecy lining, a little toy with a buckwheat insert you heated in the microwave, a battery operated heartbeat that I wrapped in one of my worn t-shirts, a little stuffed animal, 2 chew toys & on the outside a ticking clock. Today, at 5 months of age she still needs the crate covered, no longer requires a pee pad but has the clock, her stuffed animal and same 2 chew toys. I kept her crate the same at all times so she understood that that was night-night time, not play time. Before her play pen time she gets now during the day, she was crated & would get different toys for play.

Also note: Lilly was NEVER without her pee pad in her crate until she showed me she could hold it all on her own. Also, her crate was larger than normal for her size and the divider had a doorway cut into it to truly separate the 2 areas.

I've read that having a crate larger will confuse them, but you said that your pup immediately realized that one area was for her rest and one area was for her "elimination"?

yes. I too read that it will confuse them and my noon time pet sitter told me that I was teaching her it was okay to go to the bathroom in the house...on and on with the criticism from people. But what we did was buy a medium crate instead of a small. It cam with a divider. My husband took his wire snips or rotary tool & cut a doorway in the divider for her & I covered the cuts with black electrical tape. Then on one side (the back) was her pee pad and on the other side was her sleeping set up. I made such a big deal during her transition to using the yard for bathroom time that she all on her own gradually started to hold it. When she held it 100% during the 3 different times in her crate we moved to a new crate which is only the bedding and she is only in it at night. During my workday its open and attached to an x-pen.
