Why Is This Happening!!!

It's not good when the first thing you do when you wake up is cry.

As you may know from my other thread we brought home Elliot A.K.A Mr. piggy for the week because we wanted to doggy sit. Well we took him up to the lake house and he started getting sick. He wasn't eating, wouldn't really walk, was throwing up and his poop turned to diarrhea and both were clear from not eating. We called his real foster to let her know what was going on, only to tell us they've had some of his litter mates come down with PARVO.

We took Elliot to the closest vet (we're out in the middle of the woods) and after a blood test it wasn't Parvo, but he does have hookworms. So we were given a dewormer and a few shots to help with his nausea and also one because he was anemic.

After just a few short hours he was eating, his poop was going back to normal and he wanted to play with Teddie(his new buddy). If it had been parvo he would have been getting worse and worse..He's only gotten better. He even walked back to the house from the lake.

We got home from the lake yesterday and I had an email from his foster. Three pups are bad and they had lost one. He passed away on Jim's (fosters husband) chest. Jim has been sleeping on the couch with the puppies to make sure they have everything they need and aren't alone.

I got up this morning and had another email from her saying they lost another one and two more are being rushed to the vet.

I'm hoping we got Elliot out before he got sick. We may have actually saved his little life by wanting to spend more time with him.

So we may have him longer than a week because we most likely will not have an adoption this week and we don't want him going back to their kennels only to get sick with parvo. We'll have to clean, clean and clean EVERYTHING and we have to contact the vet across the parking lot, athe dog washing place next door because they take their dogs out to the grass. I'm starting to wonder if these pups picked it up from a dog at the vet office. If they walked the dog in the grass and they went to the bathroom..are dogs could have picked it up. My mind is just spinning from one thing to another.

Please please keep us all in mind because this is going to be a very hard week!

Re: Why Is This Happening!!!

If I am remembering correctly, they have had great success treating Parvo with Tamiflu. You should see if they can get the vet to prescribe it--do a google search on "parvo Tamiflu" and you get lots of advice.

Good luck--parvo is a nasty, nasty disease

Oh no! I am so sorry to hear about the bad news. I am glad Elliot seems to be doing OK for the time being. It seems like you might be his guardian angel (not to sound too cheesey or anything). Maybe you guys are meant to be together. Anyway, I am sending good thoughts your way and hope the other puppies come out alright.

That's very sad news about Elliott's littermates. As you said, maybe you got him out in time.

Hope he continues to do well and we'll be thinking of you. Please keep us posted.

So sad, I think Elliott is so lucky you offered to pup sit, I think. Hope the other two make it.

Parvo sucks.

I hope he was spared from that fate!

I'm so sorry...I hope the remaining pups recover quickly, and that you got Mr. Piggy/Eliot out in time.

Re: Why Is This Happening!!!

Thanks guys. I'm still waiting for the update on the other pups, but from the email it didn't sound good.

Elliot is doing great and has been chasing after Teddie's tail all day. Ted still can't figure out why he likes his butt so much. He's eating like a pig again and is the most active I've ever seen him. He's been coming up to adoptions for about 6 weeks and he's never been this outgoing. He's only getting better and better; not to mention he's putting on some much needed weight.

Buster is starting to take to him and has already put him in his place. It's left Elliot not to sure about him, but it had to be done some time or another.. Everyone else just goes along like nothing is new.

Teddie has his mommy time with me and then he's happy. He gets super jealous when I pay attention to the puppy and not him. I swear there is a little child in him. I turn around only to see Ted giving me the "die" look. He knows when it's time for bed that the puppy isn't coming in to bed.. so he doesn't worry as much.

Elliot is moving into my room tonight though so we'll see how that goes. Teddie may sleep at the end of my bed, keeping watch all night.

I just want to thank you guys again. I was so upset this afternoon after getting that email I needed to vent and needed as much wishful thinking possible.
