Hi there, within the next year or so I hope to be the proud loving owner of my first dog, I'm thinking of getting a labrador retriever, as I myself am an avid hunter, and have seen how happy my friends yellow lab "baylie" loves hunting.

My question is this, Baylie is of course a yellow lad, femal, and isn't your average female, she's quite larger than normal females. She runs around 80-90 pounds, depending on the time of year. I was wondering is she is from a larger breed of lab, does this exist? Or just a larger than normal Lab.

There is such thing as "British Lines" for Labs. I met a Yellow Lab the other day that was 150 pounds!!! He was HUGE. Granted, he was about 75lbs over weight, but his body structure was MUCH more massive than that of the regular Labrador.

The British tend to make their dogs "bigger" than the average hahahaha!

Show lines are genrally stockier than feild bred lines. I own two Labradors. Sadie is around 65lbs and is just an inch shy of the smallest hieght for the standard and our male Lab, Blackie, weighs about 80lbs and is around 22inches high. I guess they are both on the "smaller" side.
A lot of dogs are being bred as "oversized". If you are wanting a smaller lab, just make sure that the lines that it comes from are of the more "normal" size labs, and not of the 100+lb dogs.

According to the breed standard: Size--The height at the withers for a dog is 22½ to 24½ inches; for a bitch is 21½ to 23½ inches. Any variance greater than ½ inch above or below these heights is a disqualification. Approximate weight of dogs and bitches in working condition: dogs 65 to 80 pounds; bitches 55 to 70 pounds

I have a lab. She is probably around 100 pounds or so. She's a "larger" lab. They are great dogs. We don't hunt but she kind of does on her own she likes to cetch rabbits and such. They are also VERY good swimmers. In the summer we can hardly keep her OUT of the pool. They are such a great breed. She doesn't like gun shots but I'm sure that isn't the case with all labs if they are brought up being a hunter.

Thank you everyone for your information it has been a massive help. I must say I most likely would have been broken hearted to find out there was not a larger breed, as I would love to own a dog much like my room mates. She must be of more a British Lab breed, never met such a mild mannered dog. Except if you go hunting without her, then she'll snob you off for a few days. Sometimes it is scary how humanoid she acts!
