Post-Spay: Dark Blood Around the Vulva? Post-Spay: Dark Blood Around the Vulva?
My dog, Scout, is a 2-year-old Standard Poodle. We got her about a month ago and took her in to get spayed this week. Before her operation, she used to lick her vulva a lot. We noticed a yellowish discharge -- sort of an amber color. We took her to two different vets before the spay and they said to just watch it. They didn't think it had that pyo smell. The vet who did the spay agreed that it didn't have that pyo smell. The dog had no fever, her appetite was fine, she wasn't drinking a lot of water. However, she was having wetting accidents -- but since we have had her for such a short time, it's hard to tell what's normal.
However, since the operation, she's been wearing here e-collar and has not been able to lick herself. I've noticed that her vulva has a dark discharge, like old blood. It seems to be bothering her because she's been trying really hard to lick it. It wakes her up, so it must be really itchy. Hopefully, it's not pain waking her up... Also, she vomitted six times this evening. But that could be leftover from the spay drugs, or something she ate tonight. Also, she's been panting a lot -- but then, it's really hot in Chicago right now.
I should add that the vet saw her again on Thursday because her stitches broke open in the morning when she lunged at a squirrel. So she was put under *again* and then had to endure metal sutures to reclose the wound. The vet also thought that it looked infected, so he cleaned the area up and gave her a shot of penicillin.
Sorry this is so long. My question is this: Could she still have pyo even though her uterus was removed on Tuesday? Could there have been an infection that's still present even after the penicillin shot? Is pyo treated with a different antibiotic? She does not seem really sick to me, but I am still worried. Is this an emergency? I plan to take her back in on Tuesday (after the holiday). Is this too late?
Or, is a bloody discharge not uncommon with a spay? Could she be releasing blood that was released during the surgery?
