well, there are a couple things you can try. There is a difference in a crate is too small, too big or just right. Many times we get a crate that we feel is comfortable for the dog when in fact it may be a bit too big which is why she is eliminating in the crate. Most dogs won't go where they sleep... usually. Another thing you may try is this. Have one spot in your yard specifically designated for elimination and use the same words so they know that is what you mean. My pups know "hurry up". When I say that they know its time to go pee/poop. My dogs know when they are on their leash its time to go potty when we are on the side lawn... they know its time for a walk when we go down the driveway. Most times we go the side lawn first, if they don't go #2, we head out for a walk because excercise will help get things moving for them. They know when they are off their leash its time for play in the yard. You sound like your doing good things, maybe make things a little more structured and I think you will do fine. Keep in mind as a guide, puppies can hold it 1/2 hour for every month they are old. I am not sure what time you get home from work, but another thought is... if there is a neighborhood child that you can trust, maybe they can let them out when they get home from school, every kid likes to make $5 a week.... just a thought.
Good luck... Let me know how you make out. It won't happen over night but it will work out .. promise.
