Rear Dew Claw Removal

Hi everyone,
My 4 month old pointer/boarder collie mix has rear dew claws. The vet that I have taken her too thinks they should be removed while I gat her spayed. They are pretty flush with her leg. I dont want to risk injury but also dont want to put her through any more pain then nessersary. The cost is also around 300 dollars. Any advise?
Im thinking of taking her to another vet for a secound opinion
Thanks for any advise
Mike

If they are tight on her leg, I would leave them. If they are loose, I would have them removed.

I have had many dogs with rear dewclaws, all were tight, and I never had an injury!

Scout's were removed by the shelter she was at because the vet thought they were getting a little loose and might tear at some point. He felt that, since she was going to be in surgery anyway for the spay, why not remove them now instead of having a second surgery down the line.

I would say get it done but the price sounds way out of line. Because the dog is already going to be under a general anestetic and this is just an additional thing, it shouldn't be that much more. How much are they charging to spay her? My vet was pricey (I thought on the neuter) at over 200 but they only charged me an extra 60 or so for the dew claw removal. The total bill including getting his teeth sealed and micro chiped was just over 300. I don't want to say anything bad about a vet I don't know but the pricing seems too high. What ever it cost to do now, if by chance she does rip one later, it will cost more and be more painful for the dog.
