Miniature Schnauzer VS. Miniature Dachshund

Hi Everyone!

I am a newbie to this forum. Well, I have been considering about getting a puppy but I would like some advice from previous dog owners. I am currently debating whether to get a Miniature Schnauzer or a Miniature Dachshund. What would you all reccomend between the two breeds? I was doing a research on miniature Dachsunds and they come in Piebald and Solid colors -- I have never seen them in Piebald colors (my first time). So I am unfamiliar with that, can anyone tell me more about the Piebalds. And between the long hair and smooth coat Dachsunds, what would you all suggest? Oh, and one more question. I was looking into breeders and some breeders do not AKC register their puppies -- is it better for me to go to a breeder that register their dogs or can I register them on my own if I get them from a breeder that doesn't register them? HELP!

Thanks!

Pickleweed

Hi Pickelweed. I don't know specifics about the dachsund, but I have some general tips and information that may help you. Starting with the AKC, the AKC, as far as I know is the only registry recognized by other countries. If the registry is recognized by other countries this is usually considered to be the standard. You will not be able to obtain an AKC pedigree unsless your pup's parents are also AKC pedigreed - this is my understanding, I could be wrong. I would be circumspect of other registries because their standards may not be as high as the AKC. I would definately find out more about the registry if you are considering one other than the AKC. However, an AKC registered pup is no guarantee as to quality; AKC is merely a registry. The best way to determine your pup's lineage is to call the AKC to confirm any information that your breeder provides about the family tree of your dog. And, of course, to meet the parents of your pup. You'll be able to make a general conclusion about your pup's temperment, look, and intelligence from the parents. So, if you can't meet the parents, or can't verify the pedigree with the AKC, I would avoid that breeder. Asking for references never hurts either. If you need help finding a breeder, it might not be a bad idea to start with your local purebred rescue center, and ask if they know of any breeders. Whether a mini schnauzer or dachsund is best for you, it's really a personal choice. I have a mini schnauzer myself, a rescue from a puppy mill, and she is very intelligent and has lots of energy. I needed a dog with lot's of energy because I'm very active, and I need a dog that could keep up. But if you're looking for a dog that's more of a coach potatoe, maybe that's a dachsund, but I'm not sure because every dog is different. I hope this helps.

Those two dogs have quite different temperaments so really which one you get should depend on what would be better accustomed to your lifestyle. A miniature schnauzer is generally intelligent and playful. They need companionship more than most dogs. You have to make sure you socialize them when they are puppies or when they get older they will have problems if you don't. They bark a lot. Generally, they like everyone including strangers. The Dachshund is curious and mischievious. They tend to train their owner rather than you train it if you aren't careful. They are good to travel with. Sometimes they can be quite moody and refuse to be touched. A piebald is just a white dacshund with large black spots, very cute, especially the long haired ones. The hair issue on the daschund just depends on how much you want to spend on grooming them although the wire haired ones are a bit more hyper. A long haired one requires weekly brushing, sometimes more. On the AKC registry I believe it is just a matter of cost. It's easier to get one pre-registered so you don't have to deal with it but if you have the time and money it doesn't really matter.

not everyone wants a dog that goes over an 8 foot fence Dog whisper. Curbside was simply giving an opinion about what worked for her. Just like your opinions are what work for you. Why don't you lay off and let people share there opinions. Thats what a forum is!

We would most definately choose Miniature Dachsund. The are cute and loveable pups with tons of energy and pep. We have one ourselves and Petie is such a delightful little boy.

~*the girls*~
aka bff!

PS Petie is our Miniature Dachsund!
