A Dog's Coat

I just adopted 3 adult doxies from a breeder that couldn't care for them any longer. They are registered, good blood lines and have gorgeous pups. When I received them, their coats were matted and thin and their fur was wiry. My two doxies are brushed, bathed and very well cared for. If you look at my doxies, their fur shines and you can tell in their eyes that they are happy. I was told that all these got a bath before I got them. Besided bathing them and getting them on puppy chow (the previous owner just bought the cheapest food she could find) to put a little weight on, any ideas of how to get their fur full and shiny again? They are longhair doxies and they look at me with sad eyes. They are so sweet in when I go out to them and call their names they come up to me. I pick them up and they lay their head on my shoulder as if saying, thanks. I want to get them back healthy before even thinking about breeding them. Their names are Benny, Hanna, and Taffy Sue. Thanks for your input.

Add an omega 3 fatty acid supplement.

You can either get linatone plus or fish oil. These are supplements to help with skin, coat and the immune system.

I like salmon oil the best out of the fish oils. Also, if you decide to use fish oils, make sure you supplement with vitamin E...

I have a question about skin care also. Brady has some dry skin. It's not terrible, but alittle flaky. I take Omega 3 capsules myself. Can I just squeeze one into his food or should I be geting a different kind for the dog?

I Use Fresh Factors From Springtimeinc.com And Joint Health And Bug Off For Fleas N Ticks. My Dogs Do Not Get Brushed Daily Like They Should But They Have Shiny Healthy Coats And Good Pliable Skin, Not Itching Or Flaking On These Natural Products. I Use Them Is Why I Recommend Them.

A Dog's Coat

Thanks guys for all your help. I started them all on purina puppy chow right away and within a day of just that the coats started to look a little shiny. I am going to try some of your suggestions to get them healthy and happy. I don't think they had much attention where they were. Me and my kids are loving them and giving them attention.

As far as food goes, I recommend Nutro. It is pricier than Purina, but Purina and Pedigree have a lot of fillers in them. There are a variety of Premium brand foods out there that spend there money on putting quality products into their food rather than advertising. I believe Royal Canin also makes a Dachshund specific food. Not too sure about that. I know they do many breed specific foods. It will usually take a few weeks before you start to notice much of a difference, but just keep with it.

A Dog's Coat

Thanks for that information. I have always used Purina Puppy Chow and have had really good success with it but I am always open to better nutrition if it works. Never heard of Royal Canin but you have to know that I live in the middle of "NOWHERE".lol The adults are putting on some weight and are already looking healthier and Taffy Sue's coat is starting to shine (yeah). Taffy Sue should be getting ready to go back into heat in the next couple of months and if she is not up to my standards healthwise, she will not be bred and if she is, I will breed her this one last time and put her in a home as retired doxie. I would like to keep one of her pups just for me since she has excellent bloodlines.

Will keep you guys posted on their health and will try to get some pics as soon as I get them healthy and very happy.
