more frustrations

My dog hasn't been really eating his dog food. I mean, he does eat it..but I've only really seen him eat it like once a day. I don't really feed him much of anything else. I give him a little bit of human food (tiny tiny portions) and his doggy treats (not that much). So lately I've cut off the human food and less doggy treats, but he still won't really eat his dog food. Not once have I ever taken up his dog food, I just leave it out there so he can come by and eat however much he wants. I know it's not suggested to do that, but I feel like I have to because he's had this problem for awhile now.

I don't know why my dog won't eat his dog food that much. He looks pretty healthy, but I just know it's not healthy if my dog doesn't eat at least 3x a day. I've tried feeding it to him, but he only sniffs it and walks away.

I don't know what else to do. There are times where he does eat a good portion and then times when he won't.

Is this just one of those things that puppies go through? Ive read about it, but..I really don't know now.

Re: more frustrations

I think the problem is that you're leaving the food down all the time. It's easier to give puppy specific feeding times - at his age at least 3 times a day. That way it's easier to predict bathroom times which makes housebreaking easier.

It's the tough love method. You'll have to cut out ALL treats and human food. Nothing but his dog food. Then decide what hours puppy is going to be fed during the day. You put his food down for 20 -30 minutes. If it's not eaten, pick it up and he gets nothing until next meal time. Repeat the process. It's harder on you than it is on him, believe me, I've done it.

Don't worry, he won't let himself starve to death. At his age, I suspect it wouldn't be more than a day or two before he looks forward to meal time and wolfs down his food. Then and only then should you start giving him treats again.
